(RFA) is a private, Washington, DC-based, nonprofit corporation that provides accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. Delivered in nine Asian languages in addition to English, our journalism extends beyond radio to include web, video, mobile and e-books.

RFA is currently seeking a driven, experienced, and highly motivated full-time

Senior Editor, RFA Tibetan Service

to execute editorial strategy and news production to fulfill the mission of delivering unbiased, credible and timely Tibet-related news and information. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated editorial and management skills. S/he will also have a proven ability to lead by example and deliver high-quality journalism to meet our ever-evolving audience needs. This position is open to be based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

Leading the entire process of producing and packaging daily news stories, feature programs, and special reports, from conception, planning and execution to promotion

Making assignments and guiding RFA Tibetan reporters in eliciting newsworthy information and developing daily news and feature reports for various formats

Finding newsworthy and interesting story leads of relevance for the Tibetan Service audience; conceive, assign, and edit stories on a variety of subjects and issues covered by the Tibetan Service

Responding to breaking news and emerging issues mid-program; making quick decisions and adjustments to coverage plans as needed

Identifying and soliciting freelance writers and reporters to join Tibetan Service’s contributor network; where needed, commission stories from freelance contributors

Creating an editorial calendar of upcoming feature stories and special report packages

Researching and writing original feature stories, articles, and components of special reports, and coaching and mentoring direct reports and staff

Editing stories for publishing on RFA digital and social media platforms

Working with the RFA editorial team in DC and in Asia to discuss story ideas and edit them and with the Director to develop a strong and unique voice and tone for Tibetan Service

Other responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

At least five or more years of professional experience in journalism and/or editing, preferably specialized in Tibet news, with good understanding of issues related to Tibet, China and surrounding countries

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communication or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred

Ability to identify and assign story ideas consistent with Tibetan Service’s mission and values and guide journalists in the production of the story

Demonstrated portfolio of previous work and ability to deliver results effectively as an individual contributor as well as collaboratively with a team

Proficient with workspace collaboration tools such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, and a willingness to learn and quickly adapt to changing needs

Strong organizational, problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and ability to collaborate and multitask effectively across stories

Proven ability in navigating the terrain of ethical questions that arise during the process of news gathering, program preparation and production, and broadcasting operations in a variety of formats

Fluency in verbal and written Tibetan and proficiency in English required.
