The Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) is a global Jewish human rights organization that confronts anti-Semitism, hate, stands with Israel, defends the safety of Jews worldwide, and teaches the lessons of the Holocaust for future generations through its advocacy and education programs, investigations, research, reporting, media, films and museums. Moriah Films is the Center’s two-time Academy Award-winning film division, and the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem is scheduled to open in early 2025.

Job Overview

The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Communications will report directly to the CEO and be a vital member of the senior management team at the Simon Wiesenthal Center. This role involves crafting the organization’s communication strategy and contributing to its overall strategic planning. The SVP will develop an exceptional communications plan to enhance, promote, and safeguard the Center's brand reputation.

Key responsibilities include creating and implementing a diverse range of public relations initiatives that align with the organization's strategic goals and its leadership's vision. The SVP will serve as an ambassador for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, establishing strong relationships with media outlets to elevate the organization’s profile and garner broader support from stakeholders and donors. The position encompasses overseeing various communications products and services, including newsletters, print publications, online content, media relations, and marketing efforts. The SVP will work closely with the entire senior management team and respond promptly to any urgent communications needs.

This position is based in Los Angeles.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications Leadership:

Develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan to enhance the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s brand identity and increase program visibility among key audiences.

Create marketing and public relations strategies to foster meaningful relationships with high-level external stakeholders, including media and influencers.

Identify and address challenges and opportunities in communications, collaborating with the leadership team to formulate effective strategies.

Act as a communications advisor to the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s leadership.

Communications Operations:

Oversee the production of the Center’s print and digital communications, including the annual report and marketing materials, while managing vendor relationships.

Serve as the primary contact for media interactions that promote the organization.

Prioritize media opportunities and prepare relevant talking points, speeches, and other materials as needed.

Build and maintain relationships with the press to ensure coverage of the Center’s initiatives, events, and announcements.

Manage daily communications operations, including budgeting and staff development.

Team Development and Management:

Lead a communications team to effectively implement the communications strategy.

Foster a culture of high performance and continuous improvement, emphasizing learning and quality.

Mentor and support staff through collaborative development approaches.

Set performance goals, assign responsibilities, and conduct annual evaluations.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.

At least 10 years of experience in a senior management role, either in-house or at an agency.

Proven ability to build relationships with top-tier media personnel and successfully secure high-impact media placements.

Extensive writing and editing experience across various print and online platforms.

Demonstrated leadership in executing strategic communications and marketing initiatives to advance organizational goals.

Innovative mindset with a keen understanding of leveraging new media technologies.

Minimum of five years of experience in creating newsletters, press releases, annual reports, and other marketing materials.

Track record of translating strategic concepts into actionable plans.

Experience in mentoring and developing a team of communications professionals.

Excellent judgment, problem-solving abilities, and conflict resolution skills.

Strong management skills with the capacity to influence and engage colleagues.

Self-motivated, results-oriented, and adaptable to change.

Outstanding communication skills with the ability to effectively interface with senior management, the Board of Directors, and staff.
