Manager, Software Engineering - Connected Forms

Samsara, Los Angeles, California, United States, 90079

Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you'll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that's shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, Equipment Monitoring, and Site Visibility. As part of a recently public company, you'll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role:

Connected Forms is a brand new product at Samsara! This team is building a platform that combines the power of digitization, intuitive UI, and centralized data to accelerate digital transformation and modernize customer operations. We're expanding the team and have just entered the exciting stage of deploying our work at scale. The next year will be full of exciting twists and turns on our roadmap as we balance strategic features against short-term wins and adapt our product to achieve strong product-market fit.

On our full-stack Connected Forms team you'll lead a tight-knit group that values a quick feedback loop with customers and prioritizes speed and quality of execution. You'll find success here if you thrive in an environment with multiple, often ambiguous, projects running simultaneously and are familiar with leading your engineers through taking full ownership of the projects they tackle. This is a space for those who enjoy close collaboration with teammates and a strong focus on customers, and are motivated by seeing the direct impact of their work on meeting customer needs. Your ideal team is staffed with strong talent but balances its intensity with a generous environment of collaboration and camaraderie.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US except the San Francisco Bay Area and NYC Metro Area.

We are hiring two managers for the Forms team: one to manage the team building a delightful, efficient worker data entry experience and one to manage the side that leverages that data to deliver insights on that data.

You should apply if:

You want to impact the industries that run our world:

The software, firmware, and hardware you build will result in real-world impact—helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.

You want to build for scale:

With over 2.3 million IoT devices deployed to our global customers, you will work on a range of new and mature technologies driving scalable innovation for customers across industries driving the world's physical operations.

You are a life-long learner:

We have ambitious goals. Every Samsarian has a growth mindset as we work with a wide range of technologies, challenges, and customers that push us to learn on the go.

You believe customers are more than a number:

Samsara engineers enjoy a rare closeness to the end user and you will have the opportunity to participate in customer interviews, collaborate with customer success and product managers, and use metrics to ensure our work is translating into better customer outcomes.

You are a team player:

Working on our Samsara Engineering teams requires a mix of independent effort and collaboration. Motivated by our mission, we're all racing toward our connected operations vision, and we intend to win—together.

In this role, you will:

Drive the vision, roadmap and priorities for the team

Ensure high technical standards through both processes and the culture you instill

Hire, develop, and lead an inclusive, engaged, high-performing team

Communicate, collaborate and develop with engineers, platform/infrastructure teams, product managers, designers and support teams

Coach your team through complex projects to improve and empower those around you

Champion, role model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices

Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team

Minimum requirements for the role:

BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or other related technical degree

3+ years of technical people management experience

5+ years of relevant technical experience working with a team to develop software in a production environment

A track record of building and leading high-performing software teams

A customer-focused mindset and strong product sense

Willingness to dive deep and solve challenging technical problems

Experience with best practices around testing, monitoring, and SLAs to ensure high product quality in large-scale distributed web services

Interest in continually improving team processes, backed by a strong experience on efficient, self-directed teams

An ideal candidate also has:

Experience in any or all of: GraphQL, gRPC, React Native, React, Go, and TypeScript

In-depth experience working with public cloud providers such as AWS, Azure or GCP in a large-scale production environment
