Our new Surgery Internship program is six months in length and isdesigned to provide the opportunity to learn new skills in the operatingroom. The internship consists of a blendof AORN's Periop 101: A Core Curriculum online learning modules during weeks1-4; weeks 5-8 are spent in the operating room with preceptors and includesobservational rotations through pre-op, post-op and PACU; and weeks 9-24 willbe spent rotating through each specialty area for three weeks per specialtyincluding sports medicine, spine/procedureroom, total joint surgeries, hand/foot/ankle and trauma at our OrthoIndyHospital Northwest, located in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the end of the internship, the RN will havea choice of full-time schedule, either four 10 hour weekday shifts or three 12hour weekday shifts. This locationprovides outpatient care and inpatient care, with 10 operating rooms and a42-bed inpatient unit for patients undergoing more invasive procedures, such asdisc replacement, spinal fusion or total hip and knee jointreplacement. Other services include an urgent care, clinics, pre-opclinic, imaging and physical therapy.

General Statement ofDuties:

The Registered Nurse Surgery Intern providesnursing care and services in the operating room; assisting the physician andscrub staff during surgical procedures, including circulating duties, anddirecting non-professional personnel. Surgery Registered Nurse Intern dutiesinclude, but are not limited to positioning the patient, assisting anesthesiaduring induction, prepping the patient, opening sterile packages,documentation, operating equipment and obtaining necessary supplies. Theinternship is designed to provide the opportunity to learn new skills in theOperating Room.

Essential Duties:

1. Prepares setup, materials, medications, and equipment for cases as needed and assists surgeons in all types of procedures as required. Preps the surgical site using aseptic technique.

2. Maintains operating room and equipment in a functional manner.

3. Prepares, operates and monitors the use of various systems, equipment, and instrumentation required for the care of patients.

4. Monitors overall patient care and reports any unusual occurrence, circumstances, or discrepancies to the supervisor.

5. Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the health care team, to ensure quality of care.

6. Performs sponge, needle, and sharp counts according to policy and procedure.

7. Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens.

8. Maintains inventory control of supplies and medications, including appropriate records and documentation.

9. Reviews and verifies patient information, identification, and chart forms.

10. Supervises and teaches members of the surgical team.

11. Confines and contains sources of contaminations.

12. Reviews and revises surgeon's preference cards and communicates changes to appropriate personnel.

13. Performs and records the order of Physician's including administration of medications.

Requirements:
* Associate's Degree in Nursing (ASN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred from a nationally accredited nursing program
* Current license as a Registered Nurse with the State of Indiana required
* Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required
* No prior experience necessary; 1-2 years of PACU, ICU or ED experience preferred.
