ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RESIDENCE LIFE

VSC-UP PAT BARGAINING UNIT; GRADE 12; EXEMPT

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide coordination and oversight of the activities and programs in residence life at one Vermont State University location in alignment with an educationally developmental approach. This is a live-in position that shares in the evening and weekend on-call duty rotation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Exercise supervisory authority over functional area staff, including Resident Directors, Senior Resident Assistants, and Resident Assistants.

Establish and maintain strong community standards and mentoring relationships through visible, daily interactions in the halls with Resident Directors, Senior Resident Assistants, Resident Assistants, and students, including fostering personal development to enhance academic and professional growth.

Manage the recruitment process, selection, training, continuous development, and evaluation of Resident Directors, Senior Resident Assistants, and Resident Assistants, under the direction of the Director of Residence Life & Housing Operations.

Collaborate regularly with other Assistant Directors of Residence Life, as well as other university staff and faculty as needed.

Assist in managing room assignments, room changes, and housing records for residential students.

Assist with addressing student conduct violations, including holding lower-level conduct meetings, adjudicating assigned cases, issuing sanctions, escalation to higher levels, and recordkeeping.

Coordinate residence life staff training as needed, including emergency and crisis response in the residence halls in conjunction with public safety, facilities, local authorities, and medical personnel.

Assist with training residence life staff in conducting hearings, basic operation of the conduct system, and enforcement of the student code of conduct.

Mediate conflicts, respond to student needs, and refer students to appropriate resources as needed in an equitable and inclusive manner.

Assist with embedding social justice practices in residence life by fostering healthy, high-performing teams that ensure equitable access to resources and opportunities for all, and an environment that enables individuals and groups to feel safe, respected, engaged, motivated, and valued for their contributions toward organizational and personal goals.

Assist with completion of health and safety inspections of suites and bathrooms on a monthly basis.

Serve on University committees and task forces and participate in professional development activities as directed.

Share responsibility for night and weekend hours including programming support, on-call rotation, and crisis management.

Demonstrate inclusivity and provide excellent customer service in all modalities, including in-person, telephone, e-mail, video call, live chat, texting, and the like.

Participate in continuous improvement of residence life activities such as move-in, check-out, room changes, room selection, orientation, registration, and the end of year assessment.

Manage key control for designated campus.

Assist in the planning and implementation of the University’s new student programming such as Orientation, Homecoming, Alumni & Family Weekend, and Commencement.

Perform related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from the Director of Residence Life & Housing Operations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Direct and general supervision of Resident Directors, Senior Resident Assistants, and student workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline and one to three years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Valid driver's license and willingness to obtain a VSC fleet license.

Knowledge :

Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.

Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.

Skills :

Excellent interpersonal, supervisory, and communication skills.

Able to meet students where they are, ensure they feel listened to, and that they are comfortable working with advisor to navigate challenges and concerns as they come up.

Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as Aviso, Colleague, Self-Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.

Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.

Abilities :

Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or ‘soft’ skills, and social skills.

Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.

Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.

Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as families/guardians and external resources in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and advocacy aspects of the job.

Ability to work weekends and evenings to provide student support outside of normal business hours.

Location:

Vermont State University Johnson campus with possible travel to other campuses as needed.
