We are seeking a

Genetic Counselor

. The primary job responsibilities include providing genetic counseling to patients referred for a wide variety of indications including maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, family history concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic exposures, and infertility. In addition, the genetic counselors have opportunities for participation in education via the provision of lectures to various student groups, other medical providers, and lay groups. Collaboration in clinical research is encouraged. Opportunities exist for interaction with 25 additional counselors in other departments at this large academic medical center.Specific Duties & ResponsibilitiesCase preparation for the counseling session may include the review of previous pertinent testing results, research regarding the condition of concern, and arranging for appropriate testing.Will coordinate testing, which may include chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound, and carrier screening.Communicate with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, and various laboratories.Provide follow-up by contacting the patient and referring providers with test results, documentation of the counseling session and results of testing, and assisting with arrangements for additional consultations or testing.Cases are presented in weekly conferences for management and student education.Critical thinking and an independent work ethic can be rewarded with considerable autonomy in this work setting.Teaching responsibilities include supervision of genetic counseling for graduate students, fellows/residents in maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics, as well as medical students and gynecology/obstetrics residents on elective rotations.

Minimum QualificationsMaster's Degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.Must seek (and maintain) certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within one year of hire date.One-year genetic counseling experience, with experience in general pediatric or adult genetics clinic.
