This position serves as the assistant director of a U.S. Coast Guard Child Development (CDC) and assists the director as the focal point for the child development services and family childcare programs in Kodiak, AK. CDC services may include, but are not limited to, infant care, toddler care, preschool programs, after-school care, and hourly care. The CDC Assistant Director works under the supervision of the CDC Director with technical program policy and guidance provided by the Coast Guard Headquarters program manager.The incumbent supervises non-appropriated fund personnel including, but not limited to, teachers/childcare assistants, administrative and custodial staff who are either full-time, part-time or on-call intermittent classifications. In the absence of the Director, the incumbent is directly responsible for all aspects of the Base Kodiak Child Development Center operation, including management and supervision of all CDC staff.Knowledge Required:

A professional knowledge of the goals, principles, objectives, practices, and theories of early childhood education acquired through a combination of formal education, professional certification, and experience. Knowledge of child development norms, behaviors, growth, and progress necessary to develop and implement curricula and activities which promote a child’s physical, social, emotional, creative, and intellectual growth and development.Supervisory Controls:

Under the supervision of the CDC Director, the incumbent functions as a CDC subject matter expert. The incumbent has responsibility for assisting with management of the childcare program activities and daily business transactions of the center based on the overall objectives and priorities set with the supervisor.Guidelines:

The employee is provided established guidelines in the form of standard instructions, literature, precedents, and practices concerned with the assigned function.Complexity:

The incumbent implements policies and procedures for a variety of programs. Recruits, trains, and evaluates a staff that may include full-time, part-time and intermittent workers with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.Scope and Effect:

The effectiveness of programs and services provided by the incumbent will directly impact the quality of life for Coast Guard families served by child development services.Personal Contacts:

In addition to contacts with children, CDC staff members, parents, and the supervisor, the incumbent has contact with military and civilian command and support personnel.Purpose of Contacts:

Contacts with children and parents are to determine needs, provide for education and development, and to provide counseling, resources, and referral services.Work Environment:

The work is performed in an office setting, in classrooms, on playgrounds, in CDC kitchen and includes field trips, and visits to other offices on and off the unit.QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:Bachelor’s degree in child development or early childhood education or a combination of education and experience.Current certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required.Specialized experience in group childcare or other work that demonstrated the ability to manage the operation of a childcare center.While most of the work is done in an office setting, the ability to bend and lift children and equipment (up to 30 pounds) is required.A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile is required.HOW TO APPLY:
