Location: Kodiak, AlaskaOpening Date: 4 September 2024Closing Date: Until FilledWork Schedule: Temp FT NTE 1 Year (30-40hrs/week)Position: CDC Assistant DirectorSalary: $67,738 +DOE AnnuallyWho May Apply: All SourcesDUTIES:This position serves as the assistant director of a U.S. Coast Guard Child Development (CDC) and assists the director as the focal point for the child development services and family childcare programs in Kodiak, AK. CDC services may include, but are not limited to infant care, toddler care, preschool programs, after-school care, and hourly care. The CDC Assistant Director works under supervision of the CDC Director with technical program policy and guidance provided by the Coast Guard Headquarters program manager.This position supervises non-appropriated fund personnel including, but not limited to teachers/childcare assistants, administrative and custodial staff who are either full time, part time or on-call intermittent classifications.In absence of the Director, the incumbent is directly responsible for all aspects of the Base Kodiak Child Development Center operation, including management and supervision of all CDC staff.Knowledge Required:A professional knowledge of the goals, principles, objectives, practices, and theories of early childhood education acquired through a combination of formal education, professional certification, and experience.Knowledge of child development norms, behaviors, growth, and progress necessary to develop and implement curricula and activities which promote a child’s physical, social, emotional, creative, and intellectual growth and development. Skill in applying and using professional knowledge in planning, implementing, and evaluating effectiveness of childcare services in meeting needs of children and parents within the framework of Coast Guard policies, and requirements. Skill in communicating effectively and at appropriate levels with children, parents, staff, supervisor, Command, and others about a variety of subject matters relating to the early childhood field. Ability to delegate responsibilities and require accountability to other subordinate staff. Knowledge of budgetary, accounting, and inventory procedures sufficient to effectively plan and implement a diverse child development program. Knowledge of staff, parents, and children associated with the program including personnel rules and labor relation organizations. A technical knowledge of local, State, and Coast Guard regulations regarding child development operations is required.QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:Bachelor’s degree in child development or early childhood education or a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.Current certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation is required.Specialized experience in group childcare or other work that demonstrated the ability to:Manage the operation of a childcare center.Select, train, and supervise childcare and preschool employees, family childcare providers, or other care-giving adults.Develop and implement child development programs, including family day care programs, part-day preschool programs, and before and after school programs.Work with individuals and groups to solve complex problems related to the care and education of children.While most of the work is done in an office setting, the ability to bend and lift children and equipment (up to 30 pounds) is required when substituting in rooms.A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile is required.HOW TO APPLY:To apply, please visit our website at
