Job Description for Relief Shop Manager

Job Title:Relief Shop Manager

Reports to:Head of Retail

Responsible for:Assistant Managers, Shop Staff, and Shop Volunteers (when covering)

Salary:

£22,168 per annum

Hours:

35 per week (must be available to work weekends if needed)

Locations:

Across Worcestershire and Herefordshire

Holiday Entitlement:

28 days per year

Probationary Period:

3 months

Job Purpose:

To provide management cover across multiple shops as required, ensuring the efficient and smooth running of retail operations, staff and volunteer supervision, and the maintenance of high standards of customer service and shop presentation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Retail Operations:

Oversee day-to-day retail activities of assigned shops to ensure they are attractive and welcoming.

Maintain financial procedures including banking and accounting of all monies.

Ensure that shops are adequately staffed, managing rotas as necessary.

Supervise stock control and ensure items are appropriately priced, displayed, and promoted.

Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and legislation across all shops covered.

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment at all times.

Liaise with other shop managers regarding stock transfers and collaborative promotions.

Assist shop managers with their duties when they require additional help or during busy periods.

Customer Service:

Ensure all customers receive excellent service and resolve any customer service issues in a professional and timely manner.

Maintain a strong awareness of market trends and developments in the retail/charity sector to keep the shop competitive.

Staff and Volunteer Management:

Provide leadership to shop staff and volunteers during the manager's absence, ensuring the team operates effectively.

Support the recruitment, training, and supervision of volunteers as required, fostering a positive team environment.

Ensure all team members, including volunteers, are well-informed about Age UK and able to communicate its purpose to customers.

Address staffing issues, manage schedules, and report any major concerns to the Head of Retail.

Assist the shop manager with the supervision of staff and volunteers when necessary.

Financial Management:

Ensure financial management systems are followed in accordance with Age UK's procedures.

Review and report the financial performance of shops under your management to the Head of Retail.

Manage Gift Aid administration and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Policies and Compliance:

Ensure that all shop policies, including health and safety, are consistently followed and regularly updated as required.

Keep records of all business transactions and submit regular reports on shop performance.

External Relationships:

Represent Age UK in interactions with customers, local traders, and the general public.

Collaborate with other Age UK shops, assisting with promotions, marketing, and stock transfers.

Person Specification:

Essential:

Proven experience working in retail, preferably with some management responsibilities.

Strong financial management skills, including experience with retail financial systems.

Excellent leadership and communication skills.

Ability to maintain high levels of customer service and resolve complaints effectively.

Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment with multiple priorities.

Ability to travel to various shop locations and manage different teams.

IT literacy, including Microsoft Office and retail software systems.

Full clean driving license and access to own transport.

Desirable:

Previous experience in charity retail.

Experience managing volunteers.

Experience working across multiple retail outlets.

Experience of staff recruitment and training.

Knowledge of charity sector policies and fundraising.
