UPPER ARLINGTON CITY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Orchestra Assistant Director (2nd Semester Only)

Reports to: High School Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Description:

Assist with the direction and management of the Orchestral Program at the High School. Provide students an opportunity to participate in co-curricular orchestra performances and activities, while ensuring compliance with all state and district requirements.

Qualifications: Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited college or university

Valid Ohio teaching certificate in secondary music

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of 6-12 Orchestra program

Knowledge of UAHS policies governing the Orchestra program.

Ability to assist in implementing Orchestral policies, procedures, and budget management.

Strong instructional communication, public relations, organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Willingness to advance knowledge by attending workshops, conventions, and staff development sessions.

Adept with high school level string pedagogy with a basic knowledge and understanding of wind and percussion instruments.

Previous high school instrumental directing experience preferred.

Essential Functions:

Engage and plan with middle school and high school directors to achieve vertical alignment in programming curricular and co-curricular activities in the district orchestra program.

Assist with high school orchestra participation at all co-curricular events, including school concerts, OMEA events, COSF Festival, and any other scheduled high school orchestra performances or activities.

Assist in the arrangement of transportation, lodging, and meals for all out-of-town events and trips.

Comply with federal and state laws, Ohio Department of Education rules, UAHS rules, and board policy in the orchestral area.

Assist with the design and implementation of plans for recruitment and retention of students, especially at the high school level.

Work with other Orchestra Directors to ensure continuous program growth and strength and responsiveness to student needs.

Support UAOPA fundraisers and activities. Attend all UAOPA meetings.

Assist in ensuring that program activities are cost-effective and school funds are managed wisely.

Assist with all fundraising activities and fund management.

Assist with maintaining the current inventory of all fixed assets in HS Orchestra program, including summer instrument maintenance (cleaning, repairs, storage etc.) and music library upkeep.

Assist with ensuring students demonstrate proper performance etiquette and behavior at all high school orchestra concerts and events.

Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook as well as the HS Orchestra handbook at all Orchestra performances and activities.

Accompany and help supervise high school orchestra students on all in or out-of-town trips.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

Work to provide campus, district, and community awareness of high school orchestral performances and activities.

Assist with recruiting, supervising, and evaluating private lesson instructors for all orchestra students.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Orchestra Director or administration.

Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.

Available for frequent in-district and occasional state-wide travel.

Available to work prolonged and irregular hours.
