Position SummaryThis position performs a variety of fish hatchery maintenance activities for the Tribe’s hatchery facilities and is actively involved in all aspects of fish culture. The position may provide input to the Hatchery Manager, Enhancement Biologist, or Fisheries Program Manager regarding scheduling, grounds keeping activities, and efficiencies relative to the successful completion of hatchery activities and preventative maintenance. Along with the rest of the Natural Resources Department, this position works to protect and enhance the Tribe’s treaty protected rights.Essential Duties and Responsibilities• This position is scheduled for 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. On occasion, the workload will require more than 8 hours a day. Some holidays and administrative days will be assigned as workdays throughout the year.• Keep hatchery manager informed on the status of projects, what is needed to accomplish projects, and what projects could support program goals.• Work with hazardous chemicals while following proper safety protocol with personal protection equipment (fish and egg treatments, disinfection, etc.)• Record and maintain accurate information on data sheets, human safety concerns, maintenance, chemical inventory, project budgets, etc.• Perform routine system checks. Attention to detail to perform system checks on but not limited to: UV system, alarm system, dissolved oxygen monitoring and induction system, generators, tractors, fork lifts, pumps, filters, vehicles, etc.• Maintain, construct, and perform minor repairs to rearing units, walkways, egg trays, screens, etc.• Maintain and repair hatchery grounds, buildings, hatchery equipment, pressure washers, power tools, roads, facilities, etc.• Meet the public, maintain public relations, answer questions, and conduct hatchery tours for school groups.• Maintain water supply systems (domestic water wells, hatchery influent, drum filters, etc.)• Maintain and perform routine checks of all plumbing.• Administrative duties and all other duties as assigned.• Collect adult returns for brood stock for the Tribe’s conservation hatchery program.• Occasionally assist with staffing needs of other sectors of the fisheries program, such as carcass surveys, smolt trap shifts, etc.• Spawn collected brood stock and perform fish culture duties from the green egg stage through juvenile release such as but not limited to: fertilize eggs, inventory eggs, water harden eggs, pick dead eggs, monitor development of eggs and sack fry, pond fry, feed fish, split populations, and load fish into transport trucks.• Understand and communicate with all hatchery staff about flow indexes and density indexes.• Trap and transport adult fish.• Inventory populations of eggs and fish.• Feed fish with proper feeding techniques, altering feed regimes, and mortality sampling as needed.• Record and maintain accurate data on fish per pound samples, mortality, feed amounts, feed conversions, spawning data sheets, trap data sheets, etc.• Perform data entry efficiently and accurately. Attention to detail to perform data checks on entered data against original copy, with the ability to ensure accurate and legally defensible data.• Perform coded wire tagging and adipose fin clipping as scheduled.• Actively seek to learn new fish culture techniques.• Collect fish scales and other vital data from adult fish for analysis.• Understanding and practice of sound fish culture techniques to prevent disease transmission from one population to another.• Observe signs of sick fish and inform the manager.• Calculate and administer chemical and oral treatments to sick fish.• Calculate fish culture math such as flow index, density index, fish per pound, biomass weight, feed conversions, etc.• Collect and compile accurate NPDES data.• All other duties as assigned.Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities• Knowledge of treaty fishing rights including compliance with U.S. vs. Washington, Civil 9213, and subsequent orders. Basic knowledge of the Stillaguamish Tribe and its Natural Resources programs.• Extensive experience with plumbing, carpentry, and grounds maintenance in relation to aquaculture.• Knowledge of the use of specialized equipment specific to fish hatchery work and ability to improvise solutions related to malfunctioning and/or faulty equipment.• Ability and willingness to work weekends and holidays as scheduled, and take on-call duty shifts.• Ability to represent the Tribe professionally when interacting with the public, Tribal members, other Tribal technical staff, and other outside entities.• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for the duration of the workday, such as heavy lifting, carrying, and working in inclement weather conditions.• Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, and ability to write narrative reports in a clear and concise manner.• Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook) and use of the internet. Experience with Microsoft Access preferred.• Knowledge in the use of power tools, equipment, and their routine maintenance (drills, a variety of saws, weed whackers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, tractors, trailers, etc.)• Ability to work as a team or independently.• Ability to accept supervision, follow oral and written instruction/directions, follow prescribed policies, protocols and procedures, record data and other information accurately and legibly, and complete required administrative work in an accurate and timely manner.• Ability to maintain a positive attitude, strong work ethic with great attention to detail, and a strong interest in natural resource management.• Willingness to learn and grow with the hatchery team.• Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License, and be eligible for coverage on the Tribe’s automobile insurance.• Must have knowledge or gain knowledge of ultra violet (UV) water treatment and dissolved oxygen monitoring-metering system, and all other components of the hatchery facilities.• Must stay within a 40-minute response time of the hatchery facilities during the employee's scheduled duty phone week (Mon.-Sun.)Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The worker is frequently subject to all outdoor work conditions in the Pacific Northwest from hot/cold, wet/dry, snow/ice, and humidity. At times work duties may be inside heated or unheated buildings.
