Salary:

$86,028 – $123,947 (negotiable depending upon qualifications and experience)

FLSA:

Full-time, exempt

The City of Sedona is searching for a building professional to work collaboratively and effectively with the development and residential community and with the City of Sedona management team.

THE CITY

- Sedona is known for its natural beauty, serene setting, and vibrant arts community. Set between Flagstaff and Phoenix, the city is surrounded by a beautiful array of red sandstone formations. Sedona offers superb dining and shopping experiences, numerous art galleries, and a multitude of outdoor events.

THE DEPARTMENT

- The Community Planning and Building Department is a service-oriented department that is charged with preserving and protecting community character while providing excellent customer service. The ideal candidate will be a confident self-starter who does not require substantial oversight and is energized by a fast-paced setting.

THE POSITION

- We are seeking an experienced, motivated, dedicated individual with strong management and creative problem-solving skills. This individual must demonstrate progressive, team-oriented leadership, with a positive “can-do” attitude and excellent written and oral communication skills.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Provide sustained leadership and management direction to the building safety team.

Evaluate the work of the building safety team, establish performance goals, and evaluate employee progress and performance.

Coordinate the building permit review and inspection processes.

Perform commercial and residential plan review to ensure compliance with adopted building codes.

Perform building, mechanical, and plumbing inspections of commercial and residential building construction for compliance with adopted building codes.

Negotiate and manage third-party plan review and inspection service as appropriate.

Assist the public at the counter, on the phone, and in the field, to provide information and facilitate the permit review and inspection processes.

Assist the department director and other team members in coordinating the functions of the department.

Take advantage of available opportunities to promote the public’s knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of building safety concepts and building codes.

Periodically review and recommend adoption of new building code editions; prepare amendments as necessary.

Respond to and resolve difficult, complex, or sensitive inquiries and complaints.

Interpret the intent and make final determinations regarding the technical aspects of building code requirements.

Negotiate acceptable solutions for code compliance of complex code issues.

Establish building division policies and procedures relative to building code compliance.

Maintain accurate records of permit and complaint activities, inspections, problems, and results.

Establish performance measures, monitor, and prepare a variety of reports regarding permit applications.

Facilitate the continued development of a highly motivated, highly effective, cross-trained team.

Encourage and facilitate an environment for building team efforts and problem-solving of work-related issues.

Maximize the efficiency of staff in providing for building safety and high standards of public service.

Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and strong customer service skills.

Attend and participate in professional group meetings, seminars, and conferences.

Maintain or perform website content function within assigned role.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Knowledge of:

Construction techniques, building codes, regulations and their intent, and building performance objectives as they apply to building construction.

Ability to:

Review complex plans and determine compliance with adopted building codes; perform complex building and construction inspections; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Experience and Training Guidelines

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

A minimum of three years of increasingly responsible experience in building code administration with at least two years in a supervisory role.

Training:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

License or Certifications:

Possession of a Chief Building Official certification.

ICC Certified Plans Examiner and Certified Building Inspector.

Possession of or the ability to obtain a State of Arizona driver’s license within two months of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:

Travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, and inclement weather conditions; working at heights; working around heavy construction equipment.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling for prolonged periods of time.
