The Orange County Corrections Department (OCCD) operates the third largest jail system in the State of Florida with more than 1,500 employees including over 1,000 certified correctional officers.Representative DutiesThis position is responsible for ensuring the health, safety and secure confinement of inmates in the County correctional facilities.Supervises inmates to prevent altercations, intimidation, undesirable or illegal acts.Maintains accurate count and current location of all inmates.Completes and maintains required records, logs and reports.Performs cell and body searches as required.Ensures safe, secure and orderly movement of inmates throughout the facility.Performs security and safety checks and adheres to facility security procedures.Ensures inmate rights are observed and treated according to policy.Supervises inmate work crews.Acquires knowledge of all emergency plans and procedures.Minimum QualificationsHigh School graduate or equivalent.Must be at least 19 years of age and a United States citizen.Must possess Florida certification as a correctional officer according to Florida Statute 943.13.Must be able to work all shifts, weekends and holidays.Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.NotesAll applicants selected for hire must successfully complete the Orange County Corrections Department background screening process.Physical Abilities Test (PAT)All applicants will be required to participate in the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) designed to evaluate fitness to perform specific job-related tasks.Navigate a 388.66 yard obstacle course.Negotiate a high step hurdle over obstacles approximately 24-inches tall.Low crawl.Climb through a window 40-inches tall.10-stair ascent and descent.Use a training gun to fire six (6) simulated rounds with each hand.Manipulate a locking mechanism.Starting salary: $22.53/hour to $32.81/hour, ($50,016-$72,838).If you are claiming Veterans' Preference, you are responsible for providing the required eligibility documentation.Educational RequirementsIf your education was obtained in the United States, the County recognizes degrees or diplomas which are accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE).
