SummaryPerform unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of the grounds, playing fields, buildings, and City parks and recreational properties. Manual labor requiring the use of hand tools and light equipment operation. Employees also are involved in routine horticultural tasks, minor facility and equipment repair, and preparing playing fields for a variety of sports.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesNOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Operates chain saws, weed eaters and other light equipment to cut, prune and trim shrubbery and trees; rack leaves and removes fallen limbs and trash.Checks equipment and ensure proper operation and performs troubleshooting and maintenance.Sets up various facilities for special events and City-sponsored functions.Prepares fields for games to include mowing, painting, regulation lines, moving bleachers, removing and installing sods.Performs minor to moderately difficult trades related functions in the maintenance of City facilities to include carpentry and electrical.Cleans floors, walls, windows, blinds, lavatories, fixtures, and bathrooms.Operates a variety of mowers and equipment in grass cutting, grading, and trimming on City-owned property.Sweeps, mops, and dust assigned areas; change light bulbs and fixtures; washes windows; fills and stocks tissue, towel, and soap dispensers.Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six months or more experience in general maintenance of grounds, facilities, and landscaping.

Special RequirementValid N.C. driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and building maintenance.General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.Some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and supplies.Ability to read, write and understand and follow instructions.Ability to use hand tools.Ability to operate push and tractor mowers, simple machinery and equipment.Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

Physical RequirementsHeavy work requiring physical exertion of an excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of frequently, and/or up-to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee has to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling talking, and hearing. The employee must have the visual acuity to visually inspect small defects or parts, operation or inspection of machines and earth moving equipment, use measurement devices, and to determine the neatness and accuracy of work assigned. The employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods some of which in emergency situations.

Working ConditionsWork is performed primarily in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils, fuels.
