OpenDuties and Responsibilities:Communicate directly with the JFLF director at a minimum of a daily basis to coordinate research, teaching and to discuss any potential areas of concern with either livestock or employees.Responsible for daily care and monitoring of all departmental livestock; assisting in the management, coordination, and supervision of research livestock activities. Ensure research protocols are followed and/or modified.Implement, train, and ensure compliance of all protocols relating to livestock husbandry, facility operation, biosafety and research.Assist in the responsibilities of hiring, training, and supervision of all livestock.Responsible for coordination of the use, maintenance, replacement and repair of equipment and facilities.Oversight of the livestock facilities budget including reviewing facilities services billing and expenditures for the livestock facilities.Assist with WIMU operations/activities that require use of the JFLF and surrounding facility.Work with WIMU instructors for instructional activities in the JFLF facility and assist in hands-on instruction within the WIMU program in multiple classes & situations.Assist the Director in ensuring all compliance issues (IACUC, Biosafety, USDA, etc.) are addressed with respect to the research program and the WIMU instructional program.Assist the Director to ensure all facilities meet IACUC & AACUC & USDA expectations and the expectations associated with the national accreditation standards for the WIMU program and the Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine.Assist the Director to develop, maintain and ensure compliance of the WIMU specific procedure manual.Miscellaneous duties as requested by the MCB department head or the JFLF Director.Miscellaneous duties as requested by the WIMU director.Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:Must have hands-on experience working with cattle, sheep, and horses.Must have experience in the operation of farm machinery/equipment.Must have the ability to monitor the health of all livestock, including but not limited to the following:Ability to administer treatments by various routes, evaluate effectiveness of treatment.Perform research/medical procedures, evaluate livestock health records.Consult with veterinarian & have the ability to perform recommended procedures and directives.Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills:Laboratory animal or veterinary technician training.Practical knowledge of pasture management and crop production as a feed source.Experience handling non-domesticated large animals such as wildlife including bison, bighorn sheep, etc.Experience with livestock record keeping programs.Experience in compliance issues, particularly in respect to the developing, implementation, training, and compliance of SOPs/Protocols for animal handling, husbandry, biosafety, and experimentation.The Successful Candidate Will:Effective leadership/management skills.Ability to work non-typical hours as required for research and the WIMU program.Must be available after hours for livestock and/or facilities emergencies.Position Special Requirements/Additional Information:Laboratory animal training, compliance training, and biosafety training.Must have a working knowledge of generators and their uses.This job description should not be construed as an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or requirements, but a general description of the job.
