Position DescriptionThe Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides academic advising for specific populations as well as learning assistance support to undergraduate students. Learning assistance is composed of six centers including Academic Coaching, Accounting & Finance Lab, Tutoring Central, Math and Statistics Tutoring, Second Language Services, and Writing Studio. The AAC also houses Student Accessibility Services and Testing Services. The AAC dedicates each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Math Services Peer Leaders (PALs) provide learning assistance for a designated section of students in need of developmental skill support. Working closely with a faculty instructor, the PAL attends all class meetings, holds tutoring hours in the Academic Achievement Center, and meets with groups of students in regular tutorial meetings. PALs participate in both pre-semester and ongoing training and development to support their professional growth. Through their work, PALs will actively advance a culture of accessibility and inclusivity throughout the AAC and Bridgewater State University community.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Peer leaders report to the faculty director of Math Services. Applicants must be a part-time or full-time undergraduate student.
The best PAL candidates should be highly dependable, have excellent communication skills, and have a commitment to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion.Preferred QualificationsA major program of study in mathematics or a related field is preferred but not required. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the subject area of the course they wish to serve. A record of effectiveness in learning assistance and/or a strong interest in education with a learner-centered focus is preferred.
