Chief Building Official

The Building Department has an opening for the full-time position of Chief Building Official. The Chief Building Official is responsible for the daily management of the Building department under the general supervision of the Director of Planning and Community Development or his/her designee. In this position, the individual will formulate policies and procedures for the regulation and inspection of all buildings and structures in accordance with the State of Ohio Building Code, and enforce all other building, housing, construction and property maintenance codes and policies as assigned.
The primary tasks and responsibilities of this position include regulating and inspecting buildings and structures throughout the process of construction, alteration, repair and/or removal to ensure compliance with the State of Ohio Building Code and all relevant city ordinances and policies; interpreting and reviewing construction-related plans and documents to determine compliance with the State of Ohio Building Code and all relevant city ordinances and policies, and issuing permits as appropriate; and investigating violations of the building code and other relevant city ordinances and taking corrective action as needed.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or a closely related field preferred. Four (4) years of experience may be substituted for formal education. A minimum of seven (7) years of related building or construction work experience is required including two (2) years of management. Applicants must also have a State of Ohio Board of Building Standards certification for Building Official & Residential Building Official, along with one or more of the following State of Ohio certifications: Master Plans Examiner, Electrical Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Building Inspector, Mechanical Inspector, Fire Protection Inspector, etc. A State of Ohio Registered Architect or Licensed Engineer is preferred.
This position is offering a salary range from $71,210 to $85,452. The successful candidate will be slotted according to their experience and credentials. City benefits include medical, prescription, dental, and vision. In addition, benefits include membership in the Ohio Public Employer’s Retirement System, life insurance, vacation and sick leave accruals.
