Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) is the leading news and analysis platform of the chemical world. C&EN produces authoritative, award-winning independent journalism from around the world of chemistry, including research, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. C&EN seeks to service audiences across the global chemical enterprise with print and digital formats. Published by the American Chemical Society (ACS), C&EN is received by all paid members of the Society and is described in member satisfaction surveys as a primary benefit of Society membership. Its audited print/digital circulation is about 90,000, its newsletters go to more than 160,000 subscribers, and the website receives nearly 400,000 monthly unique visitors on average.The media group has recently launched a new strategy to grow its digital offering. At the heart of this strategic position is a more agile and diverse digital offer along with a strong global outlook in our coverage. In addition to subscription fees, C&EN is supported through advertising revenue and a generous subsidy from the Society.

Job Summary:

C&EN is looking for a talented Visuals Editor to collaborate across our editorial teams to enhance visuals for C&EN content appearing on all our platforms. The visuals editor, working closely with other members of the creative team, will assess submitted visuals, find visuals for stories and other C&EN content, brainstorm and develop original illustrations on deadline, and commission illustrations and photography as needed. We are looking for someone with exceptional abilities to contribute to crafting and maintaining a visual identity throughout all of our work.

Primary Job Accountabilities -

What You'll Do:

Monitor and evaluate submissions of artwork and requests for assistance in finding visuals or creating original artwork from reporters, editors and other newsroom staff.Work with editorial staff and other members of the creative team to find and develop engaging visuals.Look for appropriate and engaging images and artwork on news, stock, and science image agency sites.Create original illustrations as needed, working with newsroom staff in brainstorming ideas, and crafting visuals for difficult-to-illustrate stories.Develop social and promotional artwork as needed.Commission original visuals, including photography and illustrations, writing a creative brief, working with external contractors in developing ideas, setting budgets and timelines, reviewing submitted work, and approving the final delivery of digital files.Brainstorm ideas for original visual treatments for special projects, collaborate with editorial staff as they prototype new features or changes to existing editorial packages or other C&EN content.Create standards and procedures for submissions of visuals and work with newsroom staff in training opportunities for resources and development of engaging visuals.Ensure that all artwork that appears in C&EN adheres to the visual brand identity of C&EN.Required Experience and Skills:

Bachelor's degree in digital media, communications, or related field.A minimum of 4 years of experience editing visuals for media.Experience in media, journalism, or publishing, with an emphasis on crafting visuals that support storytelling.Experience handling multiple projects and meeting tight production deadlines as well as flexibility for last-minute changes.Experience maintaining a visual brand identity and writing creative briefs for external contractors.An outstanding eye for visual narrative and the ability to use photography, illustration and design elements for effective storytelling.News, stock, and archival image research skills, a familiarity with visual resources available for news stories and an in-depth understanding of copyright permissions and licensing rights.The ability to communicate a vision when commissioning original visuals, including photographic treatments, illustration style, or frame of reference.Proficiency with common visual design tools (such as Photoshop).

Job location:

ACS operates in a hybrid capacity, and this position is based in Washington, DC.There is an expectation for significant presence in the office. Relocation assistance is available.

Travel:

Some travel (up to 15%) within country. Occasional international travel may be required with advanced notice.

This role is based in our Washington, DC office. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $69,000 to $94,000 per year.
