Job Summary:C&EN is looking for a talented UX Designer to help C&EN's Creative team elevate our journalism through thoughtful editorial experience design. You will work closely with C&EN's journalists to design and build engaging story experiences. As part of a team of designers, developers, and graphic specialists, you will be shaping design strategy, visual identity, and the user experience for C&EN's website, mobile app, and digital edition. This is a wide-ranging role that will be involved with the full spectrum of our work and your projects will range from designing custom story layouts to building interactive features and visualizations to experimenting with innovative story and graphical forms. This person will work with other creative and product team members and journalists across the newsroom to sketch, design and build both one-off stories and website improvements.Primary Job Accountabilities - What You'll Do:Design, maintain, and code the look and feel of responsive pages on C&EN's website.Collaborate with editorial staff to create storytelling experiences for C&EN content across our platforms.Brainstorm and pitch ideas for new storytelling or interactive treatments, editorial components, or product enhancements which are consistent with the C&EN brand.Contribute to the development of mockups and prototypes of new features in collaboration with senior stakeholders and other members of the creative and IT and production teams.Deliver improvements and optimizations to existing features, as required.Support the production and building out of special projects, including annual editorial features and other unique digital content, in collaboration with other members of the creative team.Work with other designers and developers to establish and maintain style guides, standards, and design systems.Be a constant advocate for an excellent user experience, identifying opportunities to improve users' experience and take initiative to recommend solutions.What You'll Bring - Education & Skills:Bachelor's degree in web design, web development, information science, computer science, or related field.An eye for visual detail, and a drive for implementing great design through code.Proficiency with common visual design tools (including but not limited to Photoshop, Illustrator and Sketch).Ability to take a design from a sketch to a finished web page, including iterating and updating designs based upon user needs and stakeholder feedback.Solid understanding of UX fundamentals applied to projects.Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to describe your ideas, brainstorm with a group, and draw out feedback from colleagues.A problem-solving mindset and a knack for troubleshooting.Familiarity with Adobe Experience Manager is a big plus.What You'll Bring - Experience:At least 2 years of experience designing digital products.Experience mocking up designs and using prototyping tools.Experience in media, journalism, or publishing, with an emphasis on creating digital experiences that support storytelling is a big plus.Experience handling multiple projects and meeting tight production deadlines as well as flexibility for last-minute changes.What You Can Expect:ACS, C&EN's host organization, believes in the strength of diversity in all its forms, because inclusion of and respect for diverse people, experiences, and ideas lead to superior solutions to world challenges and advance chemistry as a global, multidisciplinary science. ACS operates in a hybrid capacity, and this position is based in Washington, DC. There is an expectation for significant presence in the office. Relocation assistance is available.Compensation:

A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $80,000-108,000 per year.Benefits:
