QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a graduate of a state approved school of vocational or professional nursing.

Must have successfully completed State Board of Registration or licensure and carry a current state license as a vocational or registered nurse.

Must be willing and able to perform the duties of this position and to assume charge of personnel assigned to his/her area.

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for supervision of the total nursing activities during each worked shift.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Is responsible during the shift for the total nursing care of residents in his/her assigned unit.

Can recognize significant changes in the condition of residents and take the necessary action.

Have working knowledge of all residents under his/her care.

Understand the assignments for nursing assistants as set out by the facility. Must supervise all assistants by checking their work closely to be sure that all assignments have been completed appropriately.

Must ensure that all medications are administered in accordance with the physician orders.

Ensure that the comprehensive care plan is followed to meet the resident's needs according to generally accepted nursing practices of the State of Texas.

Recommend changes as needed in staff as to number of assistants and kind of work performed.

Conference with Director of Nursing as needed to keep staff performing at an optimum level.

Administer all treatments as ordered by physicians. Notify physician of changes in status of resident that might require a treatment change.

Make rounds with physician as needed.

Transcribe all physician orders.

Telephone or fax physician as needed for medication or treatment changes. Follow-up on these faxes or calls.

Order medications from pharmacy as needed.

Provide accurate, daily charting as necessary on pertinent charts.

Be aware of the legal and ethical implications of your duty.

Be courteous to residents and residents' families and respond in an appropriate professional manner as the situation requires.

Follow-up on all lab work.

Know when a situation cannot be handled and be willing to ask for help and know who to ask.

Abide by the policies of the facility and ascertain that employees under his/her direction do the same.

Supervise and document serving of prescribed diets and fluid intakes and report persistent unresolved problems to the physician and/or Director of Nurses.

Preparation and 72-hour follow-up of Accident and Incident Reports.

Ensure that drugs covered by the Controlled Substances Act are verified by inventory and count each shift and any discrepancy immediately reported to the Administrator and/or Director of Nurses.

Detect and correct situations that might injure a resident or employee.

Ensure continuing promotion of the resident's physical and emotional health by assisting with his/her medical care.

JOB KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of procedures and techniques necessary to administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physician.

Knowledge of medications and possible side effects.

Knowledge of facility's policies and procedures and how to implement them.

Knowledge of aging and awareness of the need for meaningful interventions.

Knowledge of state and federal regulations.
