About this role
We are seeking a dynamic and strategic finance leader to join Substack as the Head of FP&A and Strategic Finance. In this role, you will report directly to the CFO and lead all aspects of financial planning, analysis, and long-range strategic forecasting. You will be a key business partner to the leadership team, providing insights and guidance on business performance, growth strategies, and financial decision-making. This is a critical role for ensuring Substack scales efficiently and drives sustainable growth in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $220,000-$260,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)
Own the annual budget process, quarterly forecasts, and long-term financial planning
Develop and maintain financial models that provide comprehensive insights into business performance
Partner with department heads to provide financial guidance, ensuring alignment of financial goals with business strategies
Drive variance analysis to ensure accountability and understanding of financial outcomes against plan
Strategic Finance
Provide thought leadership on growth initiatives, resource allocation, and capital efficiency
Lead scenario analysis and financial modeling to support key decisions, including M&A, partnerships and new product launches
Collaborate closely with the business and product teams to analyze the financial impact of new features and services
Provide ongoing analysis of competitive positioning and market opportunities
Reporting and Insights
Develop and enhance management reporting to provide key stakeholders with actionable insights
Prepare materials and present financial results, forecasts, and strategic insights to the leadership team
Partner with the accounting team to ensure the integrity of financial results and adherence to financial controls
Cross-functional Collaboration
Work closely with operations, marketing, sales, and product teams to ensure that financial strategies are integrated into all aspects of the business
Support fundraising activities, including preparation for potential future rounds, working closely with the CFO and external stakeholders
Qualifications:
10+ years experience in FP&A, strategic finance, or investment banking with at least 3 years in a leadership role
Experience at a high-growth tech company, preferably in consumer SaaS or Marketplace platforms
Strong understanding of financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning
Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to distill complex financial data into actionable insights
Proven track record of partnering with senior leadership to drive financial and strategic outcomes
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
Advanced proficiency in financial systems and Excel
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, or related field
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and handle multiple priorities with a high degree of accuracy
