About the Job

The purpose of the position is to support a research assistant professor in a drosophila neurobiology laboratory that conducts research in genetics and cell biology, using drosophila (fruit fly) as a model organism. This research is focused on understanding the genetic and molecular contributions to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

Research will involve molecular and biochemical work, fly genetics and dissections, fly husbandry, tissue preparation and optical imaging. The researcher will work closely with the research assistant professor but be able to carry out experiments and analyses independently. Additional activities include lab maintenance duties, ordering supplies, and making solutions.Duties & Responsibilities

75%- Experimentation: Conduct laboratory experiments using established techniques of cellular and molecular biology, including methods to analyze proteins and DNA derived from Drosophila and E. coli. Use biochemical purification techniques including immunoprecipitation, and immunoblotting. Conductexperiments in genetics using Drosophila. Maintain experimental records and document laboratory methods. Read current scientific literature; adapt published methods for use in this laboratory. Organize results and prepare figures to present results to supervisor and at group meetings.

25% - Lab Management: Manage scheduling and some training of undergraduate student workers. Assist with hiring and supervision of undergraduate student workers. Assist with orientation of new laboratory members. Order equipment and supplies for the lab and maintain records thereof. Organize chemical and biological reagent stocks, including Drosophila stocks. Assist in general husbandry ofDrosophila stocks and fly food preparation as needed. Maintain records of reagent stocks shared with and received from other labs. Maintain laboratory safety practices and records in accordance with university requirements.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materialsRequired Qualifications:Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) or combination of education and experience to equal to 4 years.

Preferred Qualifications:Wet lab bench work experience. Completion course work in Cell Biology and Genetics. Experience working with a genetic model organism. Media and solution making, and familiarity with biochemical procedures.
