Oct 4 2024GSK’s Chemical Biology department supports the delivery of our early-stage pipeline of innovative medicines which is built on GSK’s strategic investment in human genetics and functional genomics. The department is increasingly interdisciplinary, integrating technical expertise in synthetic and medicinal chemistry, molecular and cell biology, and pharmacology. Working in partnership with our Research Units, and Medicines Design organisation, our team of chemical biologists sets out to identify small molecule probes to support target identification and validation as well as assessing target tractability and informing modality selection. The purpose of this role is to provide a high level of scientific and technical contributions to projects within the Chemical Biology portfolio (including but not limited to: small molecules, PROTACs, degraders, covalents, and antibody-drug conjugates) with a primary responsibility of efficiently applying novel synthetic methods and techniques to design, synthesize, and purify tool molecules. The successful applicant can expect excellent onward training in chemical biology as well as the opportunity to collaborate with experts working in other disciplines; particularly molecular biology, high throughput chemistry and medicinal chemistry.Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

Design and synthesize probe molecules to support biological mechanism of action studies (e.g., fluoroprobes for target engagement).Apply modern synthetic technologies to the preparation of biologically active organic molecules by performing multi-step organic synthesis to prepare intermediates and final products, from milligram to gram reaction scale.Propose synthetic routes to targeted molecules including the ability to optimize and troubleshoot chemical reactions.Use and operate analytical instrumentation for the analysis and characterization of organic compounds (NMR/LCMS/HPLC).Assess and interpret data from biological assays to inform future tool compound design.Produce antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) molecules through bio-conjugation techniques to enable proof of concept studies.Conduct mass spectrometry assays to monitor protein modification by reactive probes and derive quantitative kinetic parameters.Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records using Electronic Notebook.Work effectively in both independent and highly collaborative, multi-functional teams to drive projects forward.Prepare summaries of research results and communicate findings to team members through written reports and oral presentations.Stay current with developments in the field of chemical biology, synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and drug discovery through literature review.Write-up experimental procedures for journal and patent applications to secure GSK’s intellectual property.Act in accordance with all GSK policies on personnel, safety/health/environment regulations, best laboratory practice, and Code of Conduct. Why you?

Basic Qualifications:We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:Bachelor’s degree in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology or related fields with 3+ years relevant industry experience.Lab-based synthetic organic chemistry experience, including modern synthetic methodology and execution of multi-step syntheses.Understanding of the interface between chemistry and biological systems; familiarity with chemical biology techniques, methodologies, and tools.Preferred Qualifications:If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or Medicinal Chemistry.Examples of research dissemination in the form of presentations, peer-reviewed publications or patents.Proficient in searching the chemical literature to evaluate potential solutions to synthetic challenges.Strong problem-solving abilities, including critical thinking skills and attention to detail.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within discovery project teams.Knowledge of safety protocols in a laboratory setting.
