Overview:The SCI Institute at the University of Utah is seeking a Postdoctoral researcher to lead research on edge computing for cyberinfrastructures. In addition to executing the research agenda on urgent analytics, you will propose new, creative solutions for complex, nationwide computing platforms and create partnerships with domain scientists to carry out program goals.Summary:With the advent of distributed infrastructures, the Cloud computing paradigm is progressively moving towards a full continuum from IoT devices and sensors to the centralized Cloud, with Edge (edge of the network) and Fog computing (core network) in between. Simultaneously, distributed applications also evolve: emerging AI/ML applications are based on multiple geo-distributed data sources and sophisticated data analytics. However, it is challenging to match user constraints (response time, quality, energy, etc.) with what is feasible in a heterogeneous and dynamic computation environment coupled with uncertainty in the availability of data. This project puts a special focus on Urgent computing applications.Urgent computing tackles services that require time-critical decisions that improve quality of life, monitor civil infrastructures, respond to natural disasters and extreme events, and accelerate science (e.g., autonomous cars, precision medicine, etc.).Major Duties/Responsibilities:The major duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:Lead high quality research in areas related to urgent science, programming models, and edge computing.Contribute to development of software abstractions and system architectures for middleware deployed across the Edge-to-Cloud Computing Continuum.Collaborate with application scientists inside and outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group.Develop new research directions as a basis of continued funding and the overall health of the group.Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals both internal and external, and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.Basic Qualifications:Requires a Ph.D. in a field of study related to computing and computational sciences – Demonstrated competency and knowledge of Linux operating systems and containerization platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes.Preferred Qualifications:- Ability to develop architectures for federating scientific instruments and developing end-to-end data workflow.- Experience in distributed data architectures and machine learning.- Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to automating research workflows or online processing of data streams.- Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently, outstanding written and oral communication skills, good organizational skills.Contact:Daniel Balouek-Thomert | daniel.balouek@utah.eduManish Parashar | manish.parashar@utah.edu
