The Department of Geography is one of 12 academic departments in the Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Science, with 18 permanent faculty and 5 staff, approximately 100 undergraduate majors, and a distinguished graduate program.Position Overview

The Student Services Advisor provides a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for the department, including assistance to the Department Chair, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, awarding of fellowships, student orientation and events, and related programs.Application Review Date

ACADEMIC ADVISINGServes as the primary contact for all graduate student communication.Advises faculty, staff, and graduate students on departmental and university policies and procedures.Reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion.Identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions.Manages the departmental section of the online graduate application and review system (SLATE).Responsible for interpreting organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct.GRADUATE RECRUITMENT AND ADMISSIONSAdvises current and prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation.Manages admissions process in association with Graduate Division.Creates Timeline for Admission season and organizes interviews for PhD applicants.Evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility.ASE HIRINGCreates GSI application.Manages all aspects of ASE/GSR hiring.Oversees processes for equitable assignment of Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs).FUNDING/FINANCIAL AIDOversees the allocation evaluation of Graduate Student Fellowships.Advises students on financial aid options and extra-mural fellowship opportunities.EVENTSPlans and coordinates Geography Spring Visit for admitted students.Plans Geography New Graduate Student Orientation (NGSO).PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTTakes classes/workshops that will enhance expertise in professional areas of interest and growth.Required Qualifications

Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs.Solid verbal and written communication skills.Interpersonal skills.Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures.Ability in problem identification and reasoning.Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time career position eligible for up to 40% remote work within the United States. This position is eligible for the full range of UC Benefits.The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $75,000 - $90,000, annually.How to Apply
