The Department of Urban Planning at UWM invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Urban Planning to start in August 2025. The expectations of this assistant professor position include teaching, research, student advising, faculty committee service, and other duties and responsibilities normally expected of the faculty of the University. The assistant professor will first receive a three-year probationary appointment through 2027-2028 and then can be reappointed on a probationary basis through 2030-2031. The assistant professor must apply for tenure and promotion and undergo review by this time (or earlier). The assistant professor’s tenure journey will be supported by Department of Urban Planning faculty, the School of Architecture & Urban Planning, and the College of the Arts & Architecture through an annual review process and mentoring.The Department of Urban Planning emphasizes applied, practice-based teaching and research, underpinned by Partnerships, Power, Place, and Possibilities (4 P’s) in our pursuit of social justice and sustainable economic development in cities like Milwaukee, across the Midwest, and the nation. The new faculty member needs to show commitment to addressing systemic inequities in cities and regions, as this would complement the community-engaged research and practice that has historically been done by the Department in Milwaukee and surrounding communities. In addition to developing an independent research agenda, the new faculty member should look for opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the Department of Urban Planning and other parts of UWM through the Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice, Center for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety, and other grant-funded projects.Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Urban Planning or a related field or be expected to complete their Ph.D. by July 2025.Preferred Qualifications

We are especially interested in candidates who are able to teach in the following areas, though individuals with other areas of teaching and research are encouraged to apply: economic and/or community development, housing, applied data science and technology, or applied methods in urban planning.Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to research and publication in peer-reviewed journals and other credible professional outlets, have strong research capabilities, be interested in engaging in research and projects grounded in the needs of urban planning professionals and the communities they serve, and be interested in research collaboration within the Department and throughout UWM.Professional planning experience or demonstrated experience within applied practice and community collaboration is desirable. Familiarity with global issues in planning and an ability to integrate these issues into course teaching is also desirable.Target Salary Range

Starting salary will be $70,000 (Final salary offer contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to the position).Application Instructions
