Adjunct Undergraduate GIS

Job Summary

The Evergreen State College is seeking adjunct faculty colleagues to contribute to their undergraduate GIS Certificate program by teaching courses focused on Geographic Information Systems. The adjunct faculty member(s) would teach one (or both) of the following 4 credit courses:GIS: StoryMaps and Apps

- using interactive apps for deploying maps on the webGIS: Field Data Collection

- perform mapping and collect spatial data while working in a field research situation, often outdoors.New faculty members will be provided with a starting syllabus, and modules of content, including lecture and lab scripts. Faculty in this curriculum will be expected to adapt and continuously improve the existing materials to maintain concurrency of the supplied materials and relevance with software version changes.Evergreen uses and teaches the Esri platform of ArcGIS and its extensions, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Field Maps, Insights for ArcGIS, Business Analyst, Community Analyst, and other Esri applications. GIS courses are taught in the campus scientific lab which accommodates 25 dual monitor workstations.Evergreen students seek to apply their GIS knowledge in a variety of professions including natural resource management, conservation, demographics, public policy, non-profit decision-support, and research disciplines.To be successful, GIS adjunct faculty should be able to teach undergraduate students in several of the following areas (based on specific course priorities):Use of ArcGIS Pro to manage geospatial data formats and interactions with the (Esri) geodatabase, including import, export, geodatabase design of feature datasets and classes, raster mosaic and lidar datasets, and others commonly used in the practice of GIS.Creation of layers and maps, using diverse data types, joins and relates, Arcade (and/or Python) functions, map marginalia (legends, layouts), grids and graticules, multiscale basemaps, layer properties, with attention to coordinate systems, symbolization and labeling best-practices, and metadata standards.Introductory methods for analysis of spatial phenomena, using the toolboxes in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Insights for ArcGIS, following scientific principles and best-practice workflows.Design and deployment of mobile GIS methods, using Survey123 and Field Maps software (by Esri), and the use of emerging (Esri) methods for smart devices for field data collection and navigation.Implementation of raster and elevation data types, satellite and aerial imagery, multispectral imagery, for spatial-temporal data and animations.Sharing maps and apps through StoryMaps, Web Apps, dashboards, and other Esri templates for web-dissemination.Faculty are expected to engage with students in their individual student mapping projects and advise students in the creation of GIS portfolio material showing student accomplishment of learning goals. Faculty members are often asked to help students develop projects in their own research and community interests.Candidates should be able to provide and demonstrate examples of their own work in GIS, using interactive apps (such as StoryMaps or Dashboards or similar). Though not required, a digital portfolio would provide useful indication of the candidate's level of knowledge and skills in the practice of GIS.This is a two-quarter adjunct faculty position with primary teaching responsibilities in the evenings. Successful candidates may be eligible for additional teaching opportunities as we continue to build our GIS program.Job Expectations

This is an adjunct faculty position and is not eligible for continuing appointment. All requirements for these positions must be completed at the time of hire. Salary for all positions is based on experience and degrees (see

We do not offer relocation expenses for our adjunct faculty positions.The curriculum in Professional and Continuing Education is based on certificate and degree completion programs and includes 2-credit, 4-credit, and 8-credit offerings, normally planned at a 25:1 student to faculty ratio, and capstone work including undergraduate research or internships and individual study.Evergreen uses narrative evaluations in lieu of grades and faculty are generally responsible for evaluating 25 students/quarter in each class. Faculty are also responsible for advising students as they reflect on their learning process, develop a pathway of study, and formulate their own areas of concentration.Our teaching is student-centered, which means we are interested in helping students develop strong skills in critical thinking, problem solving, communication and collaborative work. One year of graduate level GIS education using ArcGIS software suite or equivalent certification of GIS achievementOne year of experience working in professional GIS practiceAccomplishment of a thesis or capstone project (or equivalent) in a GIS research topicPreferred Qualifications

Master's or PhD degree in environmental studies, geography, GIS, or related degreeDemonstrated expertise in multiple applications of professional GIS practiceDemonstrated experience or aptitude for helping diverse and underserved populationsDemonstrated experience or aptitude for teaching GIS using exploratory, collaborative approaches or methodsConditions of Employment

Range: $3531-$7959 Faculty membership is unranked with salary determined on a non-competitive, open scale based on earned degrees and years of relevant experience.
