Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge is an ecumenical, nonprofit housing ministry that builds and renovates houses in partnership with the Greater Baton Rouge community. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Development to drive strategic engagement with the Greater Baton Rouge community and cultivate meaningful relationships to drive impactful support that will grow our housing ministry.

SUMMARY:

The Director of Development is responsible for the strategic direction, management, and execution of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge’s (HFHGBR) development program. This includes, but is not limited to fundraising, communications, and staff management of the Development department.

The Development Director will work with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to develop, direct and execute quarterly, annual and long-range fundraising plans that will facilitate the growth and expansion of fundraising efforts to meet the financial needs and objectives of HFHGBR.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Planning:

Create annual objectives to meet strategic plan goals

Provide quarterly data reports/updates that measure progress towards achieving objectives

Propose, update and revise strategic goals if necessary

Participate in strategic plan activities and budgeting process

Fund Development Program:

Develop and coordinate HFHGBR’s fundraising program, including annual and long-term fundraising plans

Assist the Executive Director with long range planning for fund development

Create and implement strategies for donor development and cultivation

Direct and supervise the fund development team’s fundraising strategies and implement activities

Develop fundraising budget, including staffing numbers

Plan fundraising campaigns, including capital, endowment and other special campaigns

Create strategies that promote a diverse and sustainable funding base for HFHGBR

Provide relevant and timely reports to ED in fundraising data, goals and plans

Proactively plan fund development growth commensurate with HFHGBR program growth

Serve as staff leader and liaison to fundraising committee and other ad hoc fundraising committees

Consult and report to the ED

Cultivation:

Maintain a focus on personal relationships with donors, volunteers and staff members

Design and implement major donor program

Create and direct a planned giving program

Create strategies to upgrade donor gifts

Develop program to encourage volunteers to become donors

Promote and create opportunities for the ED/Board to contact prospective donors for “asks”

Participate in “ask” and other cultivation activities

Supervise the design and execution of all development special events

Grant Writing:

Oversee the grant writing efforts by initiating and writing proposals

Utilize resources available to seek new Foundation and grant support

Ensure that all reports are submitted in a timely manner

Marketing:

Create marketing/public relations strategy/plan for HFHGBR

Develop promotional material that reflects HFHGBR marketing strategy

Coordinate public outreach efforts including but not limited to print and electronic newsletters, direct mail, press releases, free and paid advertising, brochures and web site

Coordinate all media relations and promote message of HFHGBR throughout the community

Serve as principal spokesperson with the ED to the donor community

General Activities and Special Projects:

Assist the Executive Director in presenting annual fund development to the Board

Work with program and operations staff to develop fundraising strategies

Ensure effective management of employee performance and other employee matters in a timely manner

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

College degree required; prefer degree in communications related field

Five to ten years fundraising experience – ideally in a non-profit and/or faith-based organization

Planned giving experience

Major donor experience with a proven track record of raising major gifts preferred

Student of fundraising strategies and tactics; willingness to study, learn and grow

Keen understanding of marketing/PR theories and strategies

Knowledge of MS Word and Excel preferred

Language:

Ability to speak in front of small and large groups to bring the message of Habitat to the larger community

Ability to take initiative and make effective recommendations to staff and Board

Supervisory Skills:

Versatility in juggling tasks, assignments and duties

Accomplished and proven staff supervisor with a consensus management style; able to attract, lead, and develop competent staff members

Shares HFHGBR’s mission driven values, is community oriented, and comfortable working in the HFHGBR environment

Ability to work with volunteers, especially on the committee and board level

May be exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme heat, when working on construction site(s)

Normal office conditions when working in the office.

Work Schedule:

Required to work 40 hours per week. Must be flexible to work extended hours during accelerated build projects.
