$80,008 to $88,883 (based on years of university teaching experience)

Purpose:

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at Santa Clara University invites applications for a full-time, renewable, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in Japanese Language and Culture. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to integrate the teaching of language, cultural awareness, and critical thinking at all levels of instruction. The appointment start date is September 1, 2025.

The expected teaching load is seven undergraduate courses distributed across three quarters. Assistant Teaching Professors are appointed for a term of three years, with reappointment dependent on programmatic need and performance.

Located in the heart of northern California’s Silicon Valley, Santa Clara is committed to promoting social justice in a liberal arts educational setting.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. in Japanese language and culture or related field (ABDs may be considered).

Evidence of at least two years of excellence in teaching Japanese at the university level.

Demonstrated expertise with proficiency-oriented and Standards-based language instruction.

Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English.

Solid proficiency with digital technologies related to teaching.

Creativity in curriculum innovation.

Ability to promote diversity within curriculum and departmental activities.

Ability to serve as a mentor to students.

Interest in enhancing students’ learning experience outside of the classroom.

Ability to work collaboratively to contribute to departmental goals.

Understanding and support of the University’s Jesuit mission.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to teach interdisciplinary courses.

Experience with instructional technologies and language labs.

Experience implementing experiential learning.

Interest in mentoring undergraduates in internships.

Experience with inclusive pedagogical practices.

Track record of success with underrepresented students.

RESPONSIBILITIESTeaching (70%):

Responsibilities include planning and teaching courses, conducting class meetings, designing learning experiences, maintaining office hours, submitting grades, and advising students.

Service (15%):

Participation in departmental activities and committees, peer observation, and community engagement.

Professional Activity (15%):

Engagement in scholarly or creative work, professional practice, or attendance at conferences.
