RD professionals help individual faculty members, teams of researchers, and administrators attract extramural research funding, build relationships, and develop and implement strategies that increase institutional competitiveness.JOB SUMMARYThe Large Grants & Strategic Initiatives Specialist will support individuals and teams pursuing large-scale funding and special initiatives, specifically in the areas of science and engineering. The specialist will have a strong research background, fluency and enthusiasm for research development, and detailed knowledge of the academic funding enterprise. The specialist will be detail-oriented and self-motivated with excellent skills in project management, team building, grant and technical writing, data analytics and visualization, and document production.The Large Grants & Strategic Initiatives Specialist will serve as a liaison to all academic divisions and cross-divisional teams for large scale proposals. Support for large scale projects will reflect campus-level and divisional priorities and may include direct outreach to individuals, teams, and divisional leadership; portfolio analyses; opportunity scouting and evaluation; assistance with strategy development and teaming; and training on various aspects of finding and securing funding, including grant writing.APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONBudgeted Salary:

Non-RepresentedJOB DUTIES70% - Research strategy and proposal developmentProvides coordinated, hands-on support to the UCSC research community in developing and submitting large-scale competitive extramural research proposals, specifically in the areas of science and engineering.Conducts proactive outreach to UCSC's research community on strategic extramural funding opportunities.Provides general consultative support to the research community outside the development of specific proposals.Coordinate activities with UC affiliated National Laboratories.20% - Program and OR Seed supportHelps develop and implement workshops and training activities, networking events, write-a-thons, structured support programs, and other outreach and capacity-building activities.Works with team members and other support units to develop and maintain processes, resources, repositories, and dissemination mechanisms relevant to proposal development and outreach.10% - RD CompetencyContributes to RD unit planning, team learning, communication, and reporting.Maintains currency in disciplinary and research development fields through professional development activities.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSAdvanced degree and/or equivalent experience and/or training.Direct post-degree research experienceSubstantial experience conducting a range of research development activities, preferably at an academic or non-profit institution.Experience writing successful research proposals.Excellent grant and technical writing skills.Strong oral communication skills.Strong analytical skills.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively.Demonstrated project management skills.Well-organized, with the ability to work independently, effectively set priorities, and meet deadlines.Ability to adapt the presentation of information for different audiences and requirements.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSDirect experience facilitating trans-disciplinary collaborative research teams.Experience facilitating workshops or trainings.Experience developing and maintaining online resources and tools.SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENTSelected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.This position requires on-campus work and may be considered for hybrid work.SAFETY STATEMENTAll UCSC employees must understand and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries.EEO/AAThe University of California is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
