The Department of Psychology at Northern Illinois University (NIU) seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in child clinical psychology to begin in August of 2025.
The specific area within child clinical psychology is open, but preference will be given to candidates with training and interests in the areas of developmental psychopathology, mental health disparities, assessment, trauma, or anxiety disorders. Successful candidates will be expected to supervise theses and dissertations, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, provide clinical supervision, actively seek extramural funding for their research program, and serve as a role model for Ph.D. students in our APA-accredited scientist-practitioner program with a strong research emphasis.
Qualified candidates who are dedicated to empowering students from underserved communities through their research, teaching, community engagement, service, and/or mentoring are strongly encouraged to apply.The Department of Psychology is in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and includes twenty-four full-time faculty members and four full-time instructors.
In addition to being one of the largest undergraduate majors on campus, the department offers a specialist degree in School Psychology and Ph.D. degrees with specializations in Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Neuroscience and Behavior, School Psychology, and Social Psychology.
The Clinical Psychology Program has been continuously APA-accredited since 1972.The Assistant Professor is expected to establish an active and innovative research program in child clinical psychology. The Assistant Professor will teach undergraduate and graduate courses that meet the curricular needs of the Department of Psychology. Additional responsibilities include mentoring and supporting graduate and undergraduate students as well as service to the department, college, and university.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching undergraduate and graduate coursesSupervising theses and dissertationsProviding clinical supervision (including, but not limited to, child and family cases)Developing a research program, including seeking extramural fundingProviding service to the university and the professionMinimum Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in clinical psychology (or related field) from an APA-accredited programCompletion of an APA-accredited internship in clinical psychologyEvidence of scholarly productivity commensurate with experience, including research focused on child clinical psychology/developmental psychopathologyEvidence of training in providing therapy and assessment to children, adolescents, and familiesPreferred Qualifications
Research agenda that includes a focus on mental health disparities, trauma, or anxiety disordersLicensed as a psychologist or license-eligible as a psychologist in IllinoisPotential to establish and maintain an independent program of researchEvidence of high-quality teaching, mentoring, and clinical supervisionEvidence of supervising evidence-based assessment and treatment approachesEvidence of working effectively in research and clinical settings with diverse populationsDemonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusionAppointment and Compensation Details
