OverviewABOUT THE POSITIONArchaeologist | Atlanta, GA | SE Regional USVHB’s Atlanta, GA office is seeking an Archaeologist to work with our Environmental Services Group. Key responsibilities of the position include conducting and supervising archaeological surveys, preparing and reviewing archaeological resource assessment reports, and evaluating archaeological resources for energy, transportation, planning, housing, and land development projects. This opportunity will require relocation to the Atlanta area with relocation assistance provided for the successful candidate. Well-qualified candidates will possess a fundamental understanding of the Section 106 process, assessing archaeological site significance under Criterion D, and have a good understanding of the precontact and historic cultures of the Southeast and Tidewater Regions.We are looking for sharp, creative problem solvers who are passionate about archaeological and historical properties. By working closely with our engineers, designers, planners, and clients, VHB strives to preserve and protect our shared cultural heritage across more than 30 offices along the East Coast.ResponsibilitiesConduct Phase I, II, III archaeological investigations and archaeological site monitoringPrepare technical reports which assess archaeological site integrity, significance, and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibilityPrepare geographic maps using ArcGIS Pro and ESRI softwareConduct archival and historical background researchSupervise technical and field survey personnel and mentor junior staffAssist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units/CollectorConduct artifact analysis and assist in curation effortsCoordinate regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and private entitiesSupport and build clientele relationshipsIntegrate with federal and state agency staff to provide support and technical assistance as neededSkills and AttributesSelf-motivated with an attention to detail and the ability to think criticallyMust be able to work independently and as a part of project teamsExcellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skillsWorking knowledge of Section 106 of the NRHPFamiliarity with NEPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, and other state environmental compliance lawsAbility to use hardware, software, and data collection technologiesQualificationsA Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field requiredMust meet the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeologyA member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA), or has the credentials necessary for enrollment3-5 years of professional experience in cultural resource management1-3 years of field experience with a range of field methodologies (i.e. survey, testing, excavation, monitoring)The ability to travel to a location, walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for long hours, in inclement weather or rugged terrainAbility to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 poundsValid driver’s licenseWe are VHB!
