Job Summary:The Pegasus research group is seeking a scientist to provide theory, materials expertise and/or diagnostic support for experiments, analyze data and for collaborations with undergraduate and graduate students.

The Pegasus-III Experiment is an ultra-low aspect ratio spherical tokamak located at the College of Engineering of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This fusion energy and plasma science experiment is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The experiment is the only solenoid-free tokamak in the world and uses local helicity injection to initiate plasmas. The group will soon be installing coaxial helicity injection and a microwave system. The research goals for this position will include solving the broad array of scientific and technical challenges encountered in deploying and using these systems. As such, candidates with a broad range of experiences and backgrounds will be considered. Specific skill sets in microwave and high-voltage pulsed-power technology, plasma material interaction science, plasma diagnostics and integrated modeling of experiments will be given priority as well as those technical areas that seek to expand the expertise in the fusion technology mission of advancing commercial fusion energy.

Responsibilities:

Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.

20% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures

20% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility

20% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities

20% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information

10% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

10% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Education:RequiredPhD in Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Plasma Physics or Physics

Qualifications:Required Qualifications:

2+ years of previous experience working in any one of the following areas: experimental plasma physics, plasma edge physics, nuclear engineering, materials science, radiofrequency wave/microwave, diagnostics or related topic to fusion technology.

2+ years of experience working with scientific analysis software such as python, MATLAB or comparable equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience writing proposals.

Experience designing and executing experiments.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
