The Johns Hopkins University Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking an

Electronics Technician/Assistant Design Studio Manager

who will provide technical expertise and guidance to engineering students developing solutions involving electronic systems and sensors focusing on defining specifications, designing, implementing, and iterating on projects, particularly in areas such as circuit design, PCB design, and electrical testing and troubleshooting. Additionally, they will provide technical training and support to students on DS equipment and resources, while maintaining and troubleshooting DS equipment, ensuring smooth operation for courses.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop educational resources and workshops to support projects and learning in the space.

Collaborate with students and faculty prototyping activities.

Assist in the management of part-time student workers.

Assist in the management of the overall operations of the Design Studio (DS), including space and equipment utilization.

Develop efficient and secure equipment usage procedures, schedules, and checklists. Prepare and maintain regulatory documentation for laboratory areas.

Conduct laboratory safety inspections and ensure compliance with safety guidelines.

Assist in supervising building maintenance and access permissions for Clark Hall.

Coordinate equipment procurement, service contracts, and supply ordering.

Oversee inventory management for tools and materials in DS and associated spaces.

Assist with setup and takedown of biological-based lab experiments.

Manage resource utilization, plan future equipment needs, and develop budgets.

Collaborate with financial staff on expenditure tracking and reviews.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Capabilities and competencies in electronic systems and sensors, circuit and PCB, electrical testing, and microprocessors.

Working knowledge of electrical testing devices such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.

Experience with hands-on electronics prototyping, including soldering, PCB design and assembly, and circuit testing.

Strong understanding of sensor integration and interfacing with microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi).

Familiarity with electronic design automation (EDA) tools such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCad.

Familiarity with embedded systems and programming languages such as C/C++, Python, or MATLAB.

Familiarity with data acquisition systems and software such as BioPac, NI, Labview, etc.

Ability to troubleshoot and debug electronic circuits and systems.

Excellent communication skills to effectively mentor and support students.

Knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to electronics and prototyping.

Knowledge of wet/biological laboratory setup and protocols.

Strong organizational skills.

Initiative to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks independently.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Proficiency in scheduling and productivity software (Google Calendar, Outlook, etc.).

Familiarity with Google Docs, Sheets, and Drive.

Physical Requirements

The candidate must be able to lift 50lbs and move heavy items around with relative frequency. Candidate must be able to be on feet for extended periods of time. Candidate must feel comfortable working with a diverse body of students, staff, and faculty.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Three years related experience.

Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a makerspace, lab, or educational environment.
