Assistant Professor in Statistics (Tenure-track) Swarthmore College

Statistics Interest Group, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, United States,

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Swarthmore College invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor in Statistics to begin in the Fall of 2025, pending final approval. We seek applicants who demonstrate excellence or outstanding promise in teaching, both in introductory and advanced courses. Additionally, applicants should have an active research program that extends opportunities for student research. We are interested in candidates who can motivate and inspire undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should have a PhD in statistics, biostatistics, or data science in hand by Fall 2025. Applicants with a PhD in a closely related field who have a strong background in statistics will also be considered. All completed applications received by October 1, 2024 will receive full consideration.

Our department offers a vibrant undergraduate program that includes a math major with an emphasis in statistics and a statistics minor. We have seventeen permanent faculty, four of whom are statisticians, and we graduate 40–50 math/stat majors each year. The teaching load is four courses a year, and it is often possible to teach multiple sections of the same course in a given semester. Our statistics courses average about 25 students. The Swarthmore undergraduate student body has 44% U.S. minority enrollment and 11% international enrollment. Reflecting the institution’s values, our department is diverse and inclusive, with two-thirds of our tenure-line faculty being women, people of color, and/or members of the LGBTQ+ community. We encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups with respect to gender, race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability status, socioeconomic background, and other axes of diversity.

The strongest applicants will have an established research program and a plan to thrive in an undergraduate-only setting. Support for faculty research includes start-up fund packages, a generous sabbatical program that begins pre-tenure, internal annual research grants and travel funding, and student research assistantships.

Applications should include

(1) a cover letter explaining specifically how you would thrive at Swarthmore and how you could positively influence an undergraduate-only institution. You should also discuss how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship and/or outreach would support Swarthmore’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

(2) a curriculum vitae, including a section that specifies the courses you have taught as a teaching assistant and those taught as the instructor of record,

(3) a research statement, including specific (past or future) opportunities for undergraduate research,

(4) a teaching statement that specifies your philosophy, policies, and practices that support student success and encourage the inclusion of students from underrepresented groups in the field; along with courses you would like to teach, including courses currently in our curriculum and/or those you would like to add, and

(5) three letters of recommendation, including at least one that addresses teaching beyond what may be found in student evaluations.
