What does an Animal Breeder do?As an Animal Breeder at Schwartz Farms, Inc., you will select and breed animals according to their genealogy, characteristics, and offspring. This role may require knowledge of artificial insemination techniques and equipment use, as well as keeping records on heats, birth intervals, or pedigree.

Essential Functions:

Provide sustenance and hydration for the animals.

Observe animals in heat to detect approach of estrus and exercise animals to induce, if necessary.

Detect, diagnose and treat animals that demonstrate signs of serious illnesses or injuries, according to company practices.

Determine inventory of supplies for order.

Select animals to be bred, and semen specimens to be used, according to knowledge of animals, genealogies, traits, and desired offspring characteristics.

Record animal characteristics such as age, growth patterns, and diets.

Tag animals to allow animal identification.

Place vaccines in drinking water, inject vaccines, or dust air with vaccine powder to protect animals from diseases.

Diagnose and utilize different methods for various situations to obtain a healthy condition.

Visual examination of body condition to optimize feeding performance.

Adjust controls to maintain specific building temperatures and ventilation required for animals' health and safety.

Maintain logs of semen specimens used and animals bred.

Inject prepared animal semen into female animals for breeding purposes through post cervical or traditional artificial insemination.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree equivalent in Animal/Zootechnical Science, Veterinary Medicine, or a closely related field, and have prior professional experience in the field of animal science.
