The University of Southern Maine’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Program invites applications for a full time tenure-track faculty position in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2025, beginning September 2, 2025.

The primary teaching responsibilities will include: An introduction to interdisciplinary social and behavioral sciences, global ethics, applied social policy, immigration, and diversity courses. The potential for supporting our interdisciplinary internship course may also be an option. Responsibilities also include undergraduate teaching of three classes per semester, advising students, maintaining an active program of research and other scholarly activity, and engaging in university and professional service.

The

Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) degree program

integrates perspectives from anthropology, sociology, psychology/behavioral/mental health as it prepares students for careers in social services, mental health, child and youth services, education, law and public policy.

The SBS degree is offered primarily online and hybrid, with face-to-face offerings. Candidates must be comfortable teaching asynchronously, hybrid with occasional face-to-face courses across all three campuses. This is an on-campus teaching position that will pay an annual salary of $58,500.

Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon our university culture of "student focused every day" and allows for regular participation in on-campus activities, meetings, and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Required Qualifications:

A PhD or equivalent terminal degree in anthropology as one of the primary interdisciplinary social and behavioral science (SBS) fields by the time of appointment.

Preferred is an applicant with an interdisciplinary focus in ethics, social policy, and/or immigration.

Demonstrated effective teaching, written and oral communication skills are required.

Demonstrated advising skills with complex student profiles.

Demonstrated external funding for willingness to seek external funding for research.

Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach asynchronous online classes; hybrid; face-to-face.
