The preferred candidate shall have at least ten years experience in education, including instruction and/or leadership experience in an alternative setting.

Knowledge of NYSED High School Graduation and Middle School Requirements.

Experience facilitating innovative approaches to curriculum, alternative instruction and use of technology in non-traditional programs.

Experience establishing a positive school culture and climate.

Experience as an active member of a secondary school community.

Exemplary communication skills.

Demonstrated skills in student management and discipline.

Successful experience working as part of a progressive professional learning community.

Principal of Kenmore Junior-Senior High School

Salary:

As per KAA Contract minimum starting at $89,000. Salary shall be based on relevant experience in an alternative setting.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

To assist the principal in coordinating and managing alternative education programs, utilizing managerial, instructional, and interpersonal skills that will meet the educational needs of students enrolled at KJSH. The ideal candidate will have a passion for providing innovative and engaging educational experiences to students who are seeking an alternative to traditional school settings. The assistant principal will be responsible for assisting the principal with all aspects of the various programs, including curriculum development, staff management, and student support services.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Role:

Implements and establishes a variety of innovative, effective, and new teaching approaches as standard methods of curriculum delivery in all homebound instruction and alternative classes taught.

Models effective instructional, classroom management, and intervention strategies for academically and behaviorally at-risk students.

Ability to monitor and assess program effectiveness, making recommendations for improvement.

Collaborates effectively with colleagues on professional learning community team(s) and instructional data team(s) to improve instruction.

Works with other teachers to identify curriculum, coursework, and assessments that help students gain mastery of content (credit recovery and project based learning).

Employs and shares effective instructional strategies that help to improve student achievement throughout the alternative education programs.

Works to achieve collective school and district goals and objectives.

Collaborates where appropriate with College/University and Career/Industry professionals in order to prepare students for college and career.

Keeps informed of and trained in educational innovations and implements current technology into classroom instruction.

Develops course content and aligns it with current NYSED adopted content state standards.

Works with special educators and parents in implementing IEP's and 504 plans for students to appropriately modify instruction, services, and expectations for students with these plans.

Helps maintain positive classroom and school-wide climates.

Pursues professional development opportunities to improve instructional practices and student achievement for alternative learning and homebound instruction.

Coordinates, sets, and monitors the goal setting, individual student progress, and successful completion of courses for all students in the alternative education programs.

Collaborates with teachers to track attendance and prepares appropriate paperwork to account for student attendance in all alternative education programs.

Program Responsibilities:

Works with counselors to recommend the placement and assignment of students to the subjects, levels, and classes in the alternative learning and homebound instruction programs.

Works individually and with program colleagues and school administration to develop and implement effective academic and behavioral interventions throughout the programs.

Supervises and oversees the appropriate use of school equipment, instructional materials and technology.

Assists in the completion of program reports, documentation, and surveys.

Coordinates student participation in program-related contests, work based learning, BOCES CTE, and serviced learning.

Assists in the selection of instructional materials, technology, and equipment needed to enhance instruction.

Participates in program and school wide decision-making activities.

Becomes a direct link between content specific teachers, students, and parents to understand expectations for academic work and program requirements.

Develops processes, procedures, and paperwork/electronic forms that assist in the effective operation of the alternative education programs.

Meets with parents and students when they enter the alternative education programs to orient, communicate expectations, and identify appropriate placement within the alternative education programs.

Trains other teachers in the methodology, software, and hardware used in the alternative education programs.

Investigates, learns, and implements new ideas about alternative education.

Builds capacity in the system for student and teacher success through focused effort on building systems that lead to effective management of the alternative education programs.

Serves as the supervisor and evaluator of alternative program classroom teachers.

Implements research based practices, skills, and strategies for supporting the emotional well-being of students as it relates to fostering student success.

Student/Teacher/Parent Relations Responsibilities:

Maintains open dialogue with the parent community through the use of multiple forms of communication (parent conferences, website, online grade book, prompt return of parent phone/email messages, consistent communication with general education teachers, etc.).

Is available to students and intervenes with students as needed.

Utilizes a variety of techniques to build relationships with students, including weekly crew meetings to establish a positive school culture.

Participates in advisory capacities in student clubs/organizations/class advisor roles.

Takes the lead in organizing and running intervention meetings for students who are struggling in the alternative education program.

Learn and adapt to the quickly changing environment of teaching and learning in an alternative setting.

Learn and implement curriculum delivery in a virtual/online teaching environment.

Clearly communicate expectations to parents and students.

Communicate and interact and make connections with students in a positive way.

Knowledge of:

21st century learning skills and methodology.

Struggling learners and ability to motivate hard to reach students.

Credit Recovery and Project based learning methodology.

College and university entrance requirements, and industry and career expectations of students who are graduating High School.

Current professional literature and materials including effective alternative education and recent leadership and instruction research.

Shall perform other duties as assigned.
