A postdoctoral scientist position is immediately available in Dr. Baker/Amado's laboratory in the Kidney and Urinary Tract Center at the Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Linda Baker, MD, a 23-year NIH-funded physician surgeon scientist, recently joined NCH as Co-Director of and Principal Investigator in The Kidney and Urinary Tract Center and as a Clinical Professor of Urology at The Ohio State University. The Baker lab is using patient-derived and mouse-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, organoids, and single-cell genomics to study the molecular and genetic mechanisms of genitourinary development and congenital birth defects (Nat Commun. 2024, PMID: 38184690). This work would be integrated with wet lab research and the use of the mouse models that we have for genitourinary diseases.Baker research has led to a large bank of >4000 human samples that can be used to study many genitourinary birth defects. By using cutting-edge DNA testing with next-generation sequencing technologies, the goal of the Baker and Amado lab is to elucidate the cause-consequence relationship of a given genetic variant identified from humans affected by genitourinary disease. The Baker and Amado lab is currently funded by the NIH/NIDDK, OSU/NCH Cross Campus Collaboration, NCH NURAG, Once Upon A Time, American Urologic Association (AUA) Urology Care Foundation, and Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital.Responsibilities

Design experiments and develop protocols required to conduct productive research, with guidance from Linda Baker MD and Nathalia Amado, Ph.D (Sr. Research Scientist).Design and conduct laboratory-based experiments in cell culture, molecular biology, and/or genetically engineered mouse models.Reprogram human and mouse cells to become induced pluripotent stem cells.Perform smooth muscle cell differentiation and organoid induction.Critically evaluate and interpret data and determine next steps.Write and publish scientific manuscripts and present the research at professional meetings.Contribute to grant submissions for external funding.Apply for postdoctoral fellowships and career development awards from the AUA and/or NIH.Work towards research independence.Qualifications

MD, Ph.D, Pharm.D, or equivalent degree in Cell/Molecular/Developmental Biology, Physiology, Genomics or related fields.Desire a career in biomedical research.Knowledge of the research process.Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research.Ability to do technical writing and have good communication skills.Minimum Physical Requirements
