REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor’s degree with a master’s degree preferred

Major or minor in instrumental music and certified by the Indiana Dept. of Education

Previous band director experience preferred or experienced as an assistant to a highly successful band director. Experience with ISSMA competition or equivalent.

Have basic knowledge of instrumental repair and replacement

Ability and willingness to serve as the high school summer band director and summer band camp director in addition to the regular school year duties.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Establishing educational objectives for the instrumental music program and developing an action plan for the achievement of these objectives.

Maintaining instrumental music as a component of a well-balanced total educational program.

The instrumental music program must be coordinated with the entire educational program at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy in a manner consistent with the high school’s educational philosophy.

Developing in students principles of musicianship and citizenship through positive learning experiences.

Fostering self-expression, self-confidence, and self-discipline in schools.

Providing students a leadership model by displaying professional and mature behavior.

Demonstrating respect for all confidential information regarding students and the administration of the instrumental music program.

Managing the maintenance of the band music, the school owned instruments, and the band uniforms. This includes a thorough and up-to-date inventory of all music, instruments, uniforms, and room furniture.

Preparing a budget for the band program, listing all anticipated income and needs. This budget should then be submitted to the Thea Bowman Leadership Academy Administration.

Preparing and managing the high school band budget developed closely with the High School Principal.

Promoting various fundraisers for the High School Band in conjunction with the High School Administration.

Preparing High School Band for participation in the ISSMA state contests, including Marching Band, Solo and Ensemble contest, Jazz Band Contest, and Organizational Contest (Concert Band).

Create a Band Booster organization group.

Abiding by the rules and regulations as set forth by ISSMA and school band policies.

Developing and maintaining a working relationship with the middle school director, including periodic meetings and visits to promote the high school program.

Maintaining a marching band auxiliary group to perform at all home football games and as a dance group at home basketball games.

Promoting a summer band program, including local parades and summer competitions (street marching/concerts) around the 4th of July. The band director is expected to be present during the summer program duration.

Developing and implementing an August band camp, which can be either a one or two-week camp in preparation for the full marching season.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Follows Student/Teacher Calendar for 2024-2025 School Year.

SALARY/BENEFITS:

in accordance with the current teacher’s salary range.

Working Conditions and Physical Environment:

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer terminal; hear and understand speech at normal levels; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
