This is a Volunteer Position but there will be a stipend of $100 per shift worked.Under general direction of the fire chief/fire marshal, performs and completes activities relating to fire prevention and fire protection planning; performs other duties as assigned.This is an entry level volunteer fire prevention officer position designed for candidates to gain experience in the field of fire prevention. The volunteer fire prevention officer works under established procedures and supervised assignments to develop a sufficient skill set to perform all aspects of their classification. The volunteer fire prevention officer is responsible for inspecting residential, commercial, industrial buildings and facilities as well as new construction and tenant improvement inspections to ensure compliance with established fire codes and regulations. The volunteer fire inspector is expected to function under minimal supervision, remain competent and trustworthy in the application of their authority.Examples of Duties:Implements and has knowledge of various codes and ordinances pertaining to building design, construction and fire protection systems.Conducts property surveys for the purpose of identifying fire safety hazards, and to ascertain completion of requested abatements; issues notices to abate and citations, as appropriate.Under general direction performs inspections on existing buildings of various occupancies, determines compliance with applicable codes, standards and ordinances, makes recommendations and corrections relative to code and ordinance requirements.Performs new construction inspections and fire protection systems tests/inspections according to approved plans.Assists fire suppression crew with fire pre-planning.Represents the Fire Department at special events and participates in public education activities.Represents the fire department at trainings and meetings as needed.Maintains computer and case file records of inspection including detailed reports, correspondence, photographs, and other evidence, which may be used in legal proceedings.Answers inquiries and responds to complaints from the public regarding fire and safety hazards, abatement procedures, and regulations.Provides other duties as required.Typical Qualifications:Volunteers appointed to this position shall be a minimum of 21 years of age at the time of appointment.Education and/or Experience:High School graduation or equivalent or possession of a General Educational Development (GED) certificate is required.License or Certification:Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Out-of-state hires will be given appropriate time to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license. A valid license must be maintained throughout the length of tenure with the department.Ability to obtain a Public Safety-First Aid (PSFA) certification. A valid certification must be maintained throughout the tenure with the department.Ability to obtain an American Heart Association Basic Life Support Card. Inspectors shall be evaluated at the one-year mark through an appraisal process to determine their suitability and capabilities to perform the full ranges as described in this classification. An Inspector who does not successfully complete their probation period may have their probation extended or could be separated from the department.Annual Evaluation:On or near the appoint anniversary date, the volunteer fire inspector shall be evaluated by their immediate supervisor to identify areas the inspector excels at or needs improvement in. All inspectors shall complete an annual skills evaluation to ensure that volunteers appointed to this classification can perform the essential functions of this position.
