Reporting to the Owner, our seasoned Houston real estate client is seeking a Controller to serve as a key partner to the Owner with the following responsibilities:
Financial & Accounting Oversight
- Oversee and assist with all financial and accounting matters, including the management and development of the company's accounting team.
Monthly Close/Balance Sheet Focus
- Manage full-cycle Microsoft Dynamics GL close process for approximately 50 entities, including reconciliation and analysis of balance sheet accounts.
Cash Management & Bank Accounts
- Support the Owner with cash management by maintaining accurate cash balances, reconciliations, and reviewing deposits for all entities. Keep real-time bank account balances visible for the Owner, process wire transfers, and manage partnership distributions/capital calls.
Accounts Receivable & Collections
- Ensure timely processing of all deposits and collections, updating accounts as needed.
Accounts Payable
- Oversee the weekly (or more frequent) processing of vendor invoices, utility bills, and personal bills, including invoice review and payment approval.
Financial & Management Reporting
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports for the Company's operating entities, verifying the integrity of reporting for approximately 40 family partnerships and trusts.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the coordination and preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
Tax Preparation Reporting
- Collaborate with the external Houston-based Tax CPA for annual tax returns and Form K-1 preparation, including reconciliation of K-1s and 1099s. Prepare quarterly tax estimates for four partnerships.
Tax Audits
- Assist the external Tax CPA in responding to IRS notices and audit requests.
Human Resources
- Manage bi-monthly payroll processing for 8 employees (via ADP), oversee 401(k) plan administration through Fidelity, and attend quarterly trustee meetings.
Process Improvement & Best Practices
- Review internal processes and systems, recommending enhancements to ensure best practices.
Special Projects & Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in various tasks and special projects as needed, either directed by the Owner or initiated independently.
Managerial & Supervisory
- Supervise 2 direct reports (bookkeepers/clerks) responsible for AR, AP, and bookkeeping, while working closely with the Owner and external Tax CPA. Evaluate staffing needs, oversee hiring, supervision, and ongoing improvements to the accounting function.
Leadership
- Provide leadership in driving value-added activities and supporting operational excellence, fostering teamwork across functions, and upholding ethical conduct in all professional matters.
