Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Program Supervisor, provides public health nursing services to individuals and families.

There are currently two School Nurse vacancies:

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assess and monitor community health status, factors that influence health, and patient and community needs and assets.
  2. Investigate and address health problems and hazards affecting the community.
  3. Effectively communicate with the patient and community regarding health, factors that influence it, and how to improve.
  4. Strengthen, support, and mobilize the patient and community to improve health.
  5. Collaborate to champion policies and plans that impact public health.
  6. Utilize regulatory actions to promote the health of the community.
  7. Promote equitable access to services and care.
  8. Collaborate with and support a diverse and skilled public health workforce.
  9. Collaborate in a strong public health infrastructure for the community.
  10. Present information on a wide variety of health issues to classes, teacher groups, and parent groups.
  11. Administer medication as necessary.
  12. Help monitor student's immunization status and administers immunizations per medical standing orders.
  13. Work with school personnel to improve the understanding of chronic health issues such as asthma or diabetes.
  14. Communicate with parents and other health care providers as appropriate.
  15. Coordinate services with school personnel in a mutually supportive manner.
  16. Participate with School Wellness Advisory Committee, ensuring that the committee has the information required to make informed decisions in a timely manner. (Not all schools have this committee).
  17. Provide input regarding an annual program plan and collaborates with co-workers on implementation of the plan.
  18. Provide input for new or revised policies and procedures.
  19. Work as the school's liaison to both CCPHD Immunization and Communicable Disease staff.
  20. Provide information, answers questions, and provides referrals as necessary.
  21. Conduct case management to support student wellness and reduce absenteeism.
General Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provide a nursing assessment on individuals who present for services, possibly including a health history, physical assessment, and a psychosocial assessment.
  2. Administer medications per medical standing orders.
  3. Provide information and referrals as necessary.
  4. Document services performed; maintain required program records.
  5. Monitor inventory of medications per Michigan Pharmacy Law and place order as is necessary.
  6. Ensure compliance with Accreditation standards.
  7. Provide input for new or revised policies and procedures.
  8. Participate in team and general staff meetings.
  9. Participate in public health quality programs (e.g., Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, Quality Control).
  10. Participation in emergency exercises and training required.
  11. Assess own needs for professional growth and participates in education that increases knowledge and skills in area of responsibilities; maintains required Nursing CEUs.
  12. Adhere to established policies and procedures and maintain client confidentiality.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Must be a Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Michigan. BSN preferred.
  2. One to three years of experience in nursing is required, with an emphasis in public health preferred.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to provide courteous and accurate information often under stressful situations for families. Multilingual preferred.
  4. Good computer skills to communicate regularly via e-mail and to collect data on electronic forms or formatted spreadsheets.
  5. Mental ability to frequently handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent distractions due to people and/or telephone calls.
  6. Occasionally required to climb and/or kneel and periodically required to stoop or bend to accommodate different working positions.
  7. Frequently required to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time, perform repetitive movement, and/or work in confined areas.
  8. A valid Michigan driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and a personal vehicle including proof of vehicle insurance are required.

Working Conditions
  1. Clinic/Office environment.
  2. Travel may be required.
  3. May have contact with infectious disease and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  4. On-call availability to respond to emergencies (e.g., program-related and public health emergencies).
  5. Extended workdays (beyond 8 hours/day) and weekends or holidays may be required.
  6. May encounter threatening people and other dangerous situations.
