The Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Arizona invites applications for a Section Head in Pathology. This leadership position oversees the pathologists and interrelated staff for pathology. The section sees a diverse workload with companion animals, livestock, wildlife and some exotics. The position brings the opportunity to work with our welcoming and inclusive faculty and staff as well as being a part of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) starting in January of 2025. This posting will come with opportunities within the CVM.The laboratory is one of the original twelve laboratories partnered in the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) and participates in supporting the Cooperative Extension's Arizona Livestock Incident Response Team (ALIRT). ALIRT was designed to enhance the diagnosis of unexplained mortality events in livestock.Responsible for daily oversight of section operations which include quality assurance and safety. This leadership position will be responsible for the pathology team; necropsy, gross and histopathological examinations on all species, case coordination, biopsy service, consultation with colleagues, practitioners, shelters, law enforcement and local, state or federal agencies. Communication with staff and clients will be important to serve in this role. There will be opportunities to work with and mentor veterinary students as well as continuing education opportunities.This role requires understanding and performance of advanced complexity tasks, ability to handle routine and complex problems creatively and innovatively, independent decision-making and effective development of people, programs, projects and systems within the section.The Section Head position is responsible for coordinating day-to-day work, participating in hiring decisions, performance reviews and scheduling. Develops, implements, and maintains section planning, standard operating procedures and systems. This position requires a high degree of innovation and creativity. Coordinates activities of staff and departments with interrelated activities to ensure best practices, ideal outcomes and compliance with appropriate policies, procedures and accreditation.There will be opportunities to work with local, state, indigenous and federal agencies as well as interaction with industry groups and stakeholders in the pursuit of improved relationships and collaboration. Accountable for developing and implementing strategic plans and policies for section.May represent the section and laboratory on internal or external task forces, committees and workgroups.The AzVDL provides accurate and timely diagnostic assistance to veterinarians, animal owners and university researchers. The AzVDL works closely with the offices of the State Veterinarian, USDA AVIC, Arizona Game and Fish Department and other state and federal agencies. Laboratory submissions include samples from wild animals, zoo animals, companion animals, horses and food-producing animals.The University of Arizona is a land-grant, research-intensive Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with a mission of continuous improvement, educating and innovating to tackle great challenges.Minimum Qualifications: DVM from an AVMA recognized school or college of veterinary medicine and American College of Veterinary Pathologists certification in anatomic pathology. Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, including 2 years of managerial experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.Preferred Qualifications: 8 or more years of professional experience with all species anatomic pathology. 5 years management experience.
