Assistant Professor, Music Theory & Aural SkillsJob SummaryThe Bower School of Music and the Arts at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks an exceptional scholar and pedagogue for a full-time, nine-month, multi-year renewable appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 7, 2025. The Bower School of Music invites applicants who can contribute a unique perspective to the music theory area and provide excellent teaching that fosters and promotes theory and musicianship skills relevant to the needs of twenty-first century musicians.The successful candidate will be expected to teach the core undergraduate music theory and aural skills curriculum; teach courses aligned with their area(s) of research/creative specialty; have a strong commitment to pedagogy and a willingness to contribute to ongoing curricular dialogue at the course and program level; pursue and maintain a high level of scholarly research and creative activity (including, but not limited to, presentation, publication, and performance); engage in service opportunities to the University and community; participate in program and departmental meetings. Candidates who can provide meaningful contributions to other academic areas as required by the curriculum or assigned by the Director are strongly encouraged to apply.ResponsibilitiesTypical duties may include but are not limited to:Develop and teach a range of undergraduate courses and collaborate on curriculum development at the course and program level.Hold office hours.Attend departmental meetings.Adopt course materials in a timely manner.Adopt the university learning management system.Adopt other campus-wide technology platforms as appropriate to other specified job duties.Complete mandatory/required training in a timely manner.Abide by University Policies and Regulations.Participate in the evaluation process in accordance with the CBA and related documents.Participate in the assessment process as required by your respective department.Timely and professional communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators.Engage in essential duties with the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, excellence, and within the accepted practices and norms of your respective field/profession.Prepare syllabi and instructional materials, develop and deliver lectures, tests, and evaluate students.Engage in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.Ensure the timely completion and reporting of student learning assessments.Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University.Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission.Attend faculty and college meetings as required.Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.Participate in curriculum development and advancement of the respective program.Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals.Work collaboratively with departmental faculty and staff in the Art Program, the Bower School of Music & the Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours. Mentor students in developing creative works and finding vocational pathways as part of a socially and culturally engaged academic and regional community.Perform regular scholarly research and publication.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities• Knowledge of major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s).• Understanding how to use digital and interactive technologies for efficiently and effectively achieving specific learning goals.• Knowledge of critical thinking processes and understanding how to help learners develop high-level questioning skills.• Knowledge and skill in the use of inquiry-based instructional models and strategies.• Knowledge and ability to use technology in various teaching modalities (e.g., face-to-face, synchronous online or asynchronous online).• Ability to collaborate with stakeholders both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction, resulting in improved student learning.Required Application Materials• Unofficial Transcripts• Statement of Teaching Philosophy• Cover letter• Curriculum Vitae• List of 5 Professional References (with relationship to each)Additional Application Materials• Teaching video(s)• Statement of Scholastic/Creative Activity as it fits the discipline• Two samples of scholarship/creative activityThe position is listed as “open until filled”, however applications received by November 15, 2024 will receive priority consideration.Minimum Qualifications• Terminal degree (DMA, Ph.D., Ed.D.) in music or related area from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation; completed by start of appointment.• Demonstrated record of scholarly/creative achievement through presentation, publication, and/or performance commensurate with career stage.• Demonstrated experience with teaching at the college/university level.• ABD will be considered if degree is conferred by August 7, 2025. If successful candidate is ABD, appointment will be made at a Lecturer level on a fixed contract.Preferred Qualifications• College/University teaching experience beyond the graduate assistant level.• Experience teaching core undergraduate music theory and aural skills curricula.• Demonstrated excellence in music theory and aural skills pedagogy, innovative course development, novel uses of technology in the classroom, and creative approaches to teaching.• Secondary area(s) of specialty complementary to existing BSMA faculty specialties.• Demonstrated experience with learning management systems and online curriculum delivery.• Demonstrated interest in and engagement with current topics in the field of music theory.• Research specialty and/or teaching expertise in popular music, jazz, and/or non-Western music and music theory.• Experience advising music majors and minors.
