The Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine & Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a professional, comprehensive arts institution devoted to the advancement of music and dance, the preparation of the next generation of arts professionals, and service to the arts professions/institutions in the region, state, nation, and world. The Music/Dance Faculty consists of an outstanding array of internationally acclaimed artists and scholars who care deeply about their students (more than 400 students are enrolled currently) and who work in close collaboration to serve the mission of the Glenn Korff School of Music. We are seeking a gifted scholar and educator who can enhance the general education and music major course offerings in music theory at the Glenn Korff School of Music. Applicants must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, and professional and university service. Of particular interest are candidates who can provide leadership in reimagining our theory curricula to reflect a new diversity of degree options and career trajectories in music, including (but not limited to) music technology, music business/entrepreneurship, commercial music, etc.

Degree programs include the BA, BM, BME, MM, and DMA with emphases in performance, composition, conducting, or jazz studies, along with the Ph.D. in Music Education, Piano Pedagogy, or Vocal Pedagogy. The endowments of the Glenn Korff School of Music and the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts support outstanding opportunities and travel for students, faculty members, and ensembles on an annual basis.

The downtown Lincoln arts campus is alive with performances and musical collaborations with college and professional orchestras, university instrumental ensembles, and local arts organizations. Performances are held in the attached 800-seat recital hall, the attached 2300-seat concert hall (recently named one of the finest college concert spaces in the country), plus a large host of nearby outstanding concert spaces, venues, and acoustically-alive sanctuaries.

The Glenn Korff School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Music Theory.

Duties and Responsibilities

TEACHING:

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory, including the coordination of undergraduate curricula across multiple sections with other instructors. Advise students pursuing the MM in music theory and participate on supervisory committees for master’s and doctoral students in other music fields.

RESEARCH/CREATIVE SCHOLARSHIP:

Establish and maintain a program of outstanding scholarly productivity in the field of music theory that contributes to the national/international discussions of the discipline.

SERVICE:

Serve on committees (school, college, and university), serve in professional organizations (SMT, CMS, etc.), and work in a collegial fashion with faculty, staff, students, and administration.

OTHER:

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Glenn Korff School of Music.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Doctoral Degree in Music Theory completed by the first day of employment, i.e., Monday, August 19, 2024.

Evidence of potential for building a record of scholarship in music theory.

Expertise or experience in pedagogical or curricular innovation in music theory.

Preferred Qualifications

Collegiate teaching experience in music theory.

Record of scholarship in music theory.

Evidence of the ability to foster an inclusive and diverse academic environment.
