Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Trains others to become lifeguards and become certified as American Red Cross LifeguardsEnsures proper preparation of classroom, pool, materials and training equipmentProvides instruction for certification in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED and Oxygen AdministrationInstructs candidates in Community Adult CPR, Child/Infant CPR and First AidTeach effective water rescues and lifeguarding skillsProvides instruction and interacts with students in the pool area (in and out of the water) and in the classroomEvaluates students' progress. Follows American Red Cross guidelines in deciding whether the student passesPrepares and grades lesson plans, homework, practice teachings and testsMaintains communication with Aquatics Inservice Training Coordinator to update class status and request materialsAssists in instruction of regular inservice training sessionsMay be required to perform emergency first aid and life-saving techniquesPerforms other duties as assigned or requiredMinimum Qualifications:
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
One (1) year experience as a lifeguard
Licenses and/or Certifications Required:
Must hold the following American Red Cross certifications: Lifeguard Instructor, First Aid, CPR/Professional Rescuer, AED and Administering Emergency Oxygen.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to physically perform and demonstrate various rescue techniques, life-saving procedures and water safety instructionAbility to effectively convey information to studentsAbility to physically withstand exposure to warm temperatures, chemicals, water and other conditions found in the pool areaAbility to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and advisory data to problem resolution. Advisory data includes Parks and Recreation policies and procedures and lifeguarding manualsPhysical Demands:
Occasional physical work lifting no more than 10 poundsOccasional lifting, carrying, walking and standingOccasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stop, kneel, crouch or crawlFrequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipmentVision for reading, recording and interpreting informationSpeech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizensWork Environment:
Extended periods of time in the pool and pool area with exposure to temperature extremes, varying weather conditions, chemicals, water and other conditions found in the pool areaEquipment Used:
This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check prior to commencing employment.
