SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The City of San Marcos is currently accepting applications for a Head Lifeguard position with the Aquatics Division of the Parks & Recreation Department.
Joining the San Marcos Aquatics Division provides numerous opportunities for growth and development. As a Head Lifeguard, you will utilize your abilities to foster a positive, upbeat work environment for both staff and residents alike. This position will allow the individual to show case their leadership, communication, and outreach skills. The Head Lifeguard will be responsible for supervising other team members and working together as a cohesive unit during regular shifts, trainings, and emergencies.
Shifts :Work hours and schedule will be consistent with job duties and responsibilities, including days, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
The Pool Manager, Head Guards, and Supervisor will try to work with your schedule and offer easy ways to trade shifts and prevent conflicts.
All part-time employees are limited to no more than 980 hours per fiscal year.Staff will be assigned to a specific team and schedule although, schedules from week to week may vary.
A minimum of 3 shifts per week is requiredShifts needing coverage are:
Off-Season Schedule:Monday-Thursday 6:15 am-10:45 am or 4:15 pm-7:45 pm.Every other Friday or as assigned for training 3:30 pm-5:30 pmSaturday & Sunday 12 pm-4 pm.
Regular Part-Time Employee:
Regular employees are able to work year-round during aquatics programming needs and can work up to 20 hours per week.
September - May availability must reflect work hours in the above time frame. Either an AM or PM weekday shift(s) or weekend availability.
Employees whose availability changes not to include the above time frame will be separated from employment with the ability to return.Steps to become a Head Life

Duties of San Marcos Aquatics Head Lifeguards typically include but are not limited to:Supervise an aquatic facility and staff during regular operationsCoach and mentor staffCommunicate effectively with staff, peers, supervisors and patronsComplete administrative and supervisory tasks as needed which may include: reporting, ActiveNet software, cash-handling, email communication, etc.Teach swim lessons according to American Red Cross standardsInteract with the public regarding the progress of program participantsEnforce required safety rules and regulationsPrevent persons from entering into distressing and dangerous situationsRescue persons in distress and administer first aid and emergency careEnsure guests are safely participating in all aquatics activitiesAnswer inquiries from the public and provide information about city programsAssist in overall maintenance, record keeping, and operations of the facilityAssist in conducting special events and department programming as neededQUALIFICATIONS
Lifeguarding (LG) or equivalent is
requiredCPR for the Professional Rescuer or Lifeguard or equivalent is
requiredWater Safety Instructor (WSI) or equivalent is
highly desirableCertified Pool Operator (CPO) or equivalent is
highly desirableFirst Aid for Public Safety Personnel is
desirableExperience for 1 or more seasons teaching or supervising swim lessons is

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or GED equivalent is

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION
Proof of valid certification must be presented at time of application or job offer will be
contingent upon certification. Course enrollment information should be uploaded as an

LICENSEPossession of an appropriate, valid driver's license, Class C, with satisfactory driving record.
This is a part time non-benefited position, however effective 07/01/2015 part time employees will receive 1 hour of sick leave accrual per 30 hours worked. Employees in this category are eligible to use up to 27 hours per year and are able to carry over up to 54 sick leave hours per year.
