Overview:

We are seeking a Linux Systems Engineer who will play a crucial role in managing and supporting Linux server and large storage systems! Areas of focus include maintaining system health, analyzing system performance, and ensuring all activities are documented in accordance with customer requirements. This position resides in the Research IT Infrastructure group in the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This team supports ORNL's goals through robust systems engineering, integration, and support tailored specifically for our research community. We manage a variety of critical infrastructures including mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other pivotal services.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Systems Administration:

Manage, configure, and maintain Linux server environments, including Red Hat, Rocky, and Ubuntu.Monitor and optimize system performance, ensuring high availability and stability.Perform regular system updates, patches, and backups.Install and maintain various software solutions, including commercial and open-source packages (e.g., Apache, MySQL, Postgres, PHP, ZFS).Virtualization & Storage:

Implement and support virtualization solutions (e.g., VMware, KVM) for Linux environments.Design and manage storage solutions relevant to Linux systems, ensuring data integrity and availability.Containerization technologies, Docker, Kubernetes.Security & Compliance:

Implement and maintain security best practices for Linux systems.Ensure compliance with organizational policies and standards.Customer Service & Support:

Provide advanced support and troubleshooting for Linux-based systems.Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve technical issues and provide recommendations for system improvements.Deliver high-quality customer service, both internally and externally.Project Management & Documentation:

Lead or participate in projects related to Linux infrastructure, from design to implementation.Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all system configurations, processes, and procedures.Prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects efficiently.Keep all required documentation updated.Other Duties as assigned to complete the mission as assigned.Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Basic Qualifications:

A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of Linux server administration experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.Experience managing VMware clusters and NAS storage systems.Proficiency in scripting with BASH and Python.Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with GPU, SLURM and other HPC environments.Experience with CI/CD support and container administration.Deep familiarity with Red Hat Linux operating systems and monitoring tools like Nagios.Knowledge of open-source web application services like Apache and Nginx.Prior experience in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment is advantageous.Strong documentation skills.Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, suitable for user support and effective teamwork.Ability to work independently in a fast-paced research environment, prioritize effectively, and adapt to changing needs.Special Requirements:
