GIS Internship - Auburn
Westervelt Ecological Services (WES) is seeking a highly motivated student looking to expand their geoscience skills and apply them to real-world environmental and ecological scenarios.
WES specializes in restoration and conservation of wetlands, streams, and endangered-species habitat in the Southeast and the rest of the U.S. Our mission is to provide enduring ecological solutions for the benefit of our stakeholders and the lands we conserve.
This is an opportunity to work directly with WES' experienced GIS Team assisting in geospatial projects and business processes: GIS modeling of habitat suitability; hydrological analysis; raster/LiDAR/drone data analysis; GPS and field data techniques; and digital and print cartography. The intern will gain direct experience with industry-standard tools like ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Esri mobile apps (ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123).
The intern will learn how WES collaborates with stakeholders (government agencies, land trusts) to permanently establish wetlands and endangered species habitat. There will be occasional opportunities to join WES ecologists in the field and learn more about habitat and species monitoring, or to fly a drone to capture unique perspectives of the lands.
This paid position is at our
Auburn, Alabama
office. Some remote work will be possible, but primarily the position will be in the office to maximize sharing of knowledge and building GIS skills.
Minimum Qualifications:Applicants must be currently enrolled in a geography/geoscience degree, or a GIS-focused biology, ecology, environmental studies, or related program for the 2024-2025 academic year.Basic experience or coursework with Esri GIS applications such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, or open-source GIS like QGIS.Ability to use a GPS unit or mobile mapping apps.Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word, and effective organization skills. Self-starter with patience and tenacity to learn complex GIS or programming skills and complete projects with demanding timelines.Additional areas of knowledge/interest that can be helpful: environmental science; programming (Python, JavaScript); CAD; real estate titles and legal descriptions.
The base salary range for this position is $20 - $22.
